Can you guys recommend me a book that will knock me on my ass? War, history, politics, fiction, nonfiction, the subject matter does not matter to me. What is the one book that you will never forget, or always have o n the back of your mind?

Henryk Sienkewicz's Trilogy:
A nobel prize winning work dealing with Poland in the Deluge period. Historical fiction, but well researched and (As the Nobel Prize would have youbelieve) quite stirring. I recommend Kuniczak's translation, the three books are "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge, Volume 1 and 2" and "Fire in the Steppe" |
"Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Heroes in Their Own Words"
"Stolen Valor" |
Piece of Cake - Derek Robinson
The story of Hornet Squadron at the beginning of the Battle of Britain. Fictional, but very well written. Great combat sequences and well-developed characters. |
Red Storm Rising was awesome, but John Clark going ballistic in Without Remorse was a great read.
Unintended Consequences |
Nonfiction:
"Imperial Hubris" by Anonymous - Some revelations for me there. "Generation Kill" - can't remember the author's name. Some around here have told me there were some inaccuracies in the book (namely the author took some hearsay as Gospel and published it without verifying it... Nevertheless, the book is excellent otherwise) "The battle for Hue, Tet 1968" by Keith William Nolan I'm reading "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" by Thomas Sowell and it's been an eye opener. "Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines That fought the Cold War " "Hostile Waters" about Russian submariners is an amazing book, you will find yourself near tears at points. There was another book called "Blind Man's Bluff" that was excellent too. Fiction: "Ender's Game" and "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus" by Orson Scott Card "Quicksilver" and "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson are MUST reads. I have the other two books in the Baroque cycle waiting on me to pick them up... This ought to get you started. |

+1 for Unintended Consequences Patriots 1984 Ender's Game I was also a huge fan of A Clockwork Orange as I read it before I ever saw the movie. What a challenge that was, figuring out all that lingo from context alone |
+1 "Yeager" was a great read. One of the best fiction stories I've ever read: Last of the Breed - Louis L'Amour |
I, Claudius and Claudius the God by Robert Graves.
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco was good too. The Hunt For Red October, Red Storm Rising, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games by Tom Clancy were all really cool too. |
My Side of the Mountain - 30 Years ago... still a good read
A Walk in the Woods - Byson |

Alas Babylon
I read it when I was 14 or 15 because my dad gave it to me. Still like it to this day. |

Moby Dick - Melville Huey Long (The Kingfish) - Williams True History of the Kelly Gang - Carey The Way to the West (Essays on the Central Plains) - West Call of the Wild - London |
A lot of good recommendations. Here's my addition:
Dune - Frank Herbert |
Unintended Consequences - I just re-read this and it's a must read for gun owners.
Rogue Warrior - The first book was great and the rest were OK. Anything by Tom Clancy - I've read most of his books and many 2 or more times. One of the best authors. One Shot, One Kill : Marine Sniper - A great classic I've read 3 or 4 times. These are my favorites out of a few thousand books I've read. I used to read alot and take out 5 to 10 books at a time. |
