Reward offered in teen girl's slaying
(Chicago) Tribune staff reports
Published March 3, 2006, 4:01 PM CST

The Chicago Public Schools system is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman who fired shots that killed a 14-year-old honor-roll student as she was getting ready for school.

Starkesia Reed was killed about 8 a.m. in her home on the 6700 block of South Honore Street on the city's South Side, police said. An innocent bystander, the girl heard gunshots and went to the window to see what was happening.

A bullet pierced the glass and struck her in the head, killing her, police said. Other family members were home at the time, but no one else was injured.

Reed was a freshman at Harper High School, 6520 South Wood St., officials said. She had a 3.5 grade point average and attended the school with two older brothers. A third brother graduated last year, and a fourth is a Harper football coach.

"This is a heartbreaking day for the Chicago Public Schools family," system Chief Executive Arne Duncan said at an afternoon news conference where the reward offer, out of the district's Children First fund, was made.

"Somehow, as a community, we have to express our outrage," Duncan said. "It is unbelievable to me this continues to happen—that guys can run up and down like it's the Wild West, with assault rifles. Somehow we have to put a stop to this."
Witnesses reported shots coming from a green car, a Cavalier or a Cadillac, at Honore and 68th Streets, police said. The vehicle may have continued west on 68th Street.

Investigators recovered casings from a high-caliber gun, possibly an assault-type weapon, near the shooting scene.

Detectives said they believe the occupants of the car were firing at rival gang members on the sidewalk. Police are investigating whether the shooting was in retaliation for a gang shooting last month in the area.

A prayer vigil was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in front of the girl's home.

Tribune staff reporters Dan P. Blake and Gerry Doyle contributed to this story.

What is a "high caliber" gun... is it one that is more exclusive, or costly, than one of my lowbrow "low caliber" ones?

And I find it ironic that the CPS chief doesn't realize that
a) These were criminals, committing a felony... one more law wouldn't stop them; and
b) in the "wild west", the crime rate was lower, and there was no such thing as an "assault weapon" in the "wild west" - in fact there was no such animal until Josh Sugarman of CPHV coined the term in 1989.

It seems obvious that he never taught history.

And the Chicago libs are running an AWB for IL up the flagpole at the state capitol. Coincidence?

I hear the ice-cream truck has a new one out: The Fifty-caliber, puppyslayer 3000 semiautomatic assault machine pistol equipped with high capacity clips and a folding front stock.

If gangbangers learned how to hit their target, this problem would be over pretty quick.

Do I have to point out that the wild west was far safer than chief wiggum's little socialist hellhole?

Goes to show you that GPA has nothing to do with inteligence. Don't get me wrong I feel sorry for the girl but I chalk this up to natural selection.
