Platinum and 18K Gold. I took it to a friend who works at a jeweler and she polished it, but the scratches are too deep. Is there something else that I can do?

the value is in the metal. Take it to a jeweler and they will pay you by weight.

Platinum and Titanium rings are a pain in the ass when it comes to wear and buffing scratches.

I'm not sure there are many other options other than buying a new one.

I have a wedding ring laying around the house (divorced)...I try to think of something cool to do with the gold every so often...but nothing has come to mind.

Isn't the melting point of gold somewhere around 1600 F? How hot does a propane torch get?

Better question is...what the hell do I do with the melted blob of gold?

I met a guy years ago who was in the gold reclaiming business, as one of the things he did. He explained it was very easy. First, you just put an ad in the paper that you will buy old gold jewelry. Then you get an assay kit, which is available for not much money (couple hundred bucks or so, IIRC). Assaying is easy. You just rub the jewelry on a stone, drop on some liquid and in a minute you know what the purity is.

then you simply weigh it ($200 for a good scale) and offer the person a price. Just keep an eye on the price of gold, and what you can sell it for, and make them an offer. Chances are they aren't going to spend a lot of time shopping it around, anyway, so it is possible to make a healthy profit margin.

Smelting wasn't a problem, either, he said. You just take the big box of stuff to the smelter, they melt it for you, assay it themselves, and give you the cash. Smelting it yourself isn't all that hard, but will probably require more regulatory nonsense than you want.

Or so he told me, anyway.

I thought I had seen something on the web where a company would melt your wedding ring down and mold it into a bullet. Seems appropriate for this site. Anyone else seen something like that? I'm off to google it, I'll reply again if I find something.

I'm tempted to take my propane torch and try to melt it down into a blob, and pour it in a small divot in sand to make my own "nugget" just for shits and giggles.

Is a propane torch hot enough?

Could I use a corningware dish to melt it in? Would it withstand the heat?

Natural gas and oxygen will melt gold, platinum is a whole different story.

Years ago (while living overseas) I met an American "ex-pat" who followed his wife to a hotel room and found her with two guys making amatuer porno movies while he was supposed to be at work. In addition, her spending had kept them in debt for the length of their 12 year marriage. At first he wanted to kill her but then (as he put it) a smile came over his face as he realized he was free. He was a diesel mechanic by trade so he set off around the World finding work "catch as catch can". When I met him he was in Kathmandu setting off on a three week trek in the Himalayas. His wedding ring? He had it melted and turned into a skull & crossbones charm, symbolic of his new self-proclaimed profession "pirate of life". Just a thought.

Cool site, the goddammo one. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the set I bought when I was deployed. Hand made with out birthstones in them. Too bad. What a waste of money. I should have sold them last year when a pawnshop offered me $300. I was holding out for $400. I tried near Tacoma and was offered $30, as the guy claimed they were only 14K. I just walked out. I bought them at the jewler that was allowed to sell on post. If he got complaints, he'd be booted and lose the higher profit margins he made there since we were a captive market, and he'd probably have had a hand taken off, or at least beat a few times by the local police.

That site seems really appropriate the more I think about it. Perfect for the "arfcomm" curse, especially since they offer it in .223.

Just one note.

Platinum right now is CRAZY expensive. And gold is doing well too. If you are selling you ring for the metal, now is the time to do it.

Other than that - take a blurry photo of it and sell it to some guy on ebay ;o)
