I'm 37 and if I could go back and change things I would only make a small career shift from school psychology to school guidance counseling. In fact, I plan on making the switch in the near future.
My emphasis has always been on career satisfaction rather than money. |

I should have bought some cows when I got out of high school. With the advent of the internet, college is for suckers!! You can learn it all online for free now and do your own thing. I would have bought up as much land as I could afford to pay the loans on and held on to it for as long as possible and then sold it off to buy microsoft stock. It sounds great with 20/20 vision now.

I'm a junior poli sci major, and as of right now, I see no use in my degree if I don't go to law school or the armed forces. Where did you find a job? I currently have a sales job with a cell phone store, but I don't plan on working this field the rest of my life by any means. What else is out there that would be applicable to poli sci? |

Back when my brother was 19 years old, he managed a McDonalds restaurant. He directed the poly-sci grad with a background in sales to mop the floors and scrub baseboards.

I'd've stuck with the medical profession.
EMS was the first thing in my life I was good at other than football. I wish I'd've stuck with it and gotten my RN. I was just all out of any ounce of human compassion I had after I got out of .mil. I honestly didn't care if people were sick, hurt, or whatever, and pretty much felt everyone was faking or whineing. I'm only slightly better than that now, but, it would've been a solid field that I was good at. |

Naval Avionics...
I passed up a golden opportunity during my SR year of HS... It's been 21-22 years since talking with a Navy recruiter, but I remember being tested for something involving Naval Avionics and was one of the the two highest scores in my class. Not wanting to commit to anything long term, I wussed-out. Still kicking myself in the ass for that. If nothing else, I should have at least joined the military. Probably would be working in a local PD by now if I had.

I am going through the same thing. I have a masters in an it field and hated it. Not to mention it is very hard to get a stable job in it now. Going to try real estate. i am a hustler and it is a nice self employed career with relatively low cost of entry. If I had to do it all over god who knows since I have been out of work I think about it every night

with the foresight i have now carried to "back then" i would have been mowing a helluvalot more lawns and spending next to nothing, then investing in my drug of choice along the way.

I hear ya, my daughter's friend's dad, started out mowing the neighborhood lawns in high school, he now owns his own gardening & landscape company with something like 50 people working for him. |

If I could go back say 50-60 yrs I'd would've liked to be a gunsmith and have a gunshop as well, lots of leftover 1911's Mauser 98's from WWII for sale back then..cheap too, A guy probably could have made a good buck sporterizing and customizing 1911's and Mauser's and selling various other brands of firearms that were still quality made items, like new M70Winchesters, Colt 1911's and SAA's. I Goddamn sure would'nt be a pipefitter like I am now...

If I had the physical skills, I'd be a pro baseball player. I can't imagine a better job. Just think...they PAY you to play baseball in the most beautiful parks in the country.

I'd have done much better in school, got my appointment to the Air Force Academy, memorized all the eye charts so they didn't know I needed glasses, and flown planes with the aid of secret contact lenses.

Around the time I that I was the age to be making the decision, it was rumored that the Air Force was going to be getting rid of the A-10 and using a kevlar armored F-16 with a centerline 30mm gun pod to replace it.
Had I known they were keeping it, I would have done my damndest to end up flying one. |

While I've loved my time in the military, If I had to do it all over again, I'd either a) stay in the army and never switch over to USAF, or B) I would've gotten out after one tour and gone full time a fly fishing guide in either Colorado, Montana, or Alaska - maybe even run a custom rod and fly shop out of an A frame log cabin :-)

Been in the IT field for almost 15 years. Would probably start with that, but keep a strong background in EE, which is where I started in the first place.
If I had a chance to start over, it would probably be back to mechanical/electrical design, or Electrical Engineering/PLC programming. No problems finding a position there... |

I would have done the same things I have done, only I would have actually applied myself, been motivated, and not sat around with my thumb up my butt. Although, if I had been motivated, I wouldn't have blundered into what I do now, which is a pretty cushy gig. I would have ended up being a priest or in management somewhere and I'd probably be pretty miserable. Occasionally, being lazy and sliding by with the bare minimum works out for people. I work in the academic world. It's a huge scam, but that's the way I like it. My retirement plan is to dodder around the university, senile as all get out, attempting to create atomic mutant super-monsters, until I drop dead of a heart attack one day. Collecting my paycheck all the while, of course. I intend to be the flesh-and-blood incarnation of Dr. Hubert Farnsworth from Futurama.
My biggest regret isn't career-related. My biggest regret is not asking the first woman I truly loved to marry me. It's entirely my fault that she isn't alive right now. I intended to propose, but I chickened out. I then resolved to do so the next time I talked with her. I never got another chance. Had I done so the first time, she wouldn't have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. That was a while ago and I've found a pretty good one since then, but everyone is compared to her. |

Currently my degree is in Theology and I've been a cop for going on 12 years.
If I could go back, I would have joined the military when I got out of college. Tried to get into some medical field, maybe try to get into the Army's PA program. |

If you really want to do that, the transition isn't that terribly bad. Pay is upper 20's while you're in the academy, and mid to upper 30s when you're done with your probationary period. At least, that's what KC MO pays. Jim |

Well, I like what I do now. If I wanted to change anything tho, I would have done better in college, and busted my ass harder flying. I might not have had to keep being a flight instructor at friggen 25.

To do it over again...I would have skipped grad school. I'm so burned out on the subject matter I don't even want to be it the field anymore. Looking at a career change at the end of grad school is not a good feeling.
Looking at the current circumstances, and where the taxpayer money is going now and in the future, one has to look at either Defense or Nat. security. |

Have you ever considered studying accounting or finance / economics? I cannot think of a better source of job opportunities than those 2 fields, as far as business is concerned. The beauty lies in the freedom that the professional charters and certifications provide for oneself in the business community. Whether it's a Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Financial Planner, or others, the freedom to spend one's life either completely working for oneself or for a corporation / business / government / partership, or any combination thereof, is pretty wild. |
