Let us see, massX velocity=inertia/resistance (gravity, air) = heavier bullet loosing velocity faster and having a steeper trajectory.  Sounds like the .177 should go further, but at POI, the .22 will do more damage....

I haven't shot anything with my .177 that a .22 pellet would kill any faster.

I've always been partial to the 5mm (.20 cal) pellet guns. Sheridan use to make them. Haven't owned one in a long time.

Where's the 5mm (.20) pellet for comparision?

OK, I stand corrected. The 22 would be better for lethality but not necessarily range compared to the 17.

I used to squirrel hunt as a kid with a .22 pellet rifle....found it way more reliable than a .177
The .177 required a perfect headshot to take one down without causing it to suffer. The .22 did a much better job on rodents. Havent owned either in many years. I still miss that .22

I think there is a .25 cal pellet projectile too. Read about them but never saw one.

Yep, different calibers for different applications. The .20 cal was probably a compromise
between the .177 and .22 cal pellets.

If there are pellet gun enthusiasts around, maybe they can fili us in on the calibers.

They even make .50 caliber and 12 guage pellet guns now.  I don't have a link, but they're out there.  

I recently picked up an RWS 34 with the 4x32 scope combo and love it.  Headshots on squirrels from 10-20 yards and it's a fast shooter.  Rated at 1,000fps, but I imagine it's in the 900 range.  

I also just picked up some GAMO RAPTOR pellets.  They aren't made out of lead, but some other material and GOLD plated.  $5 bucks for 200 of them, but they're supposed to give a 25% increase in velocity and I think that's right.  With my standard pellets I was hitting about 450 pages through a phone book, these were running past 650 pages and leaving dents up to 800.  So if they're coming out of the barrel around $1,200fps or so that's good performance for a pellet gun.  

We've got some geese that landed in a pont behind the house about 120-140 yards out and I can reliably plink them with this new ammo.  It gets there in a hurry and probably more accurate than my custom 10/22.  To say the least, I'm impressed with this gun.  Great quality.

I got them at wal-mart.  Gamo doesn't even have them listed on their website when I checked the other day.  I also got the hollow point looking ones with the steel core and they hit hard!

Those larger calibur pellet guns require you to refill your gun with a compresser and cost as much as real guns not really usefull to me.

I'm sure they're more popular in countries that don't allow powder propelled fire arms.  The price on the .50 was around 900.   Just another toy for big boys to play with.  Wonder what the game warden would say if he caught me using a pellet gun for my next deer hunt.

Love mine. Haven't shot it much sinse i moved to the country.

me and my best friends shot benjamin sheridan pellet guns tell we were like 16 every day. me and my one friend had the 22 version other friend had the 17.  the 22 is way better , way more knock down power on birds.

I'm able to hit them from that distance to keep them from sh!tting and eating up my backyard.  Gotta aim about a foot and a half higher.  Doesn't kill them, just moves them from my side of the fence back to the pond.
