So how do people finance engagement rings? Loans? Credit cards? Cold hard cash? How does someone blow a ridiculous amount of money on a ring they can barely afford and get away with it?
|
|
Piracy should get you some sweet rings.
Why? You gettin' hitched? |
|
Maybe? Not right now. Curiosity question. |

Payed cash from a sweet no interest USAA loan...god i love the army

Buy what you can afford. Especially if there is no prenupt with a jewelry recycling clause.

Don't go to mall jewelry stores. Their mark up is criminal. Find and independant jewler like an estate jewler. They will be happy to talk with you and educate you on what to look for. Buy a nice stone and get it mounted. I paid $3,000.00 for my wifes set and it is appraised and insured for $7,500.00. It's a very nice 1 Ct. stone.
|
|
IIRC, the ring is supposed to be about 1/4 of what you make a year, as set up by the jewlery cartel.
Diamonds are not precious stones, as DeBeers claims them to be. They are found in abundance all over the world. Hell, they discovered a mine up in Canada. Diamonds are a big rip off. |

What the heck do you need an engagement ring for? By a nice gun or three instead.

My husband did it the 12-month interest-free financing way. He could have paid cash, but figured why bother since it was zero percent. I don't have a $10K-20K ring like a lot of my friends do, though. Mine is very nice, but MUCH less expensive than that. I don't have a clue how some of my friends' husbands paid for their rocks. Unless they are fake -- which is always a possiblity, I suppose.

Two of my friends (this is not a joke) just put two quarters in the machine there at the grocery and turned the knob.....

My wife didn't want one... wanted to use the money to buy a house instead. Yeah, she's the smart one in the family. So I got her a small 3/4 Ct. one instead. I got the stone from a friend who was bring them up from Brazil and then I pulled in some favors from people and had it mounted here. Didn't cost too much and it looks nice. She was a little upset when I first gave it to her becasue she didn't want to spend the money but when I told her how much I paid she didn't mind.

If my current relationship pans out I'll have to borrow against my home equity line of credit.

Damn, thats expensive pie |

I paid cash. Now I'll get no return on the investment, it's collecting dust in an undisclosed location.

I paid cash for my wife's ring set, 1/2 single solitaire engagment ring.

My girlfriend, now fiancée, works for a custom jeweler. So I got what she wanted at cost. She is very happy with her choice and I was happy to get it at no mark up. Still hit me for $1800 But I used the card so I would not have to dish it all out at once.

Cash. $6000 last month. Appraised for $15400. She will never know what I paid for it.

Get married while you are broke, that way you never pine for the days of when you were single and had money.

It is unbelievable how stupid women are and how they have been brainwashed by DeBeers and the diamond cartel.
It is even more unbelievable how much some men pay for a shiny rock and shiny metal just so they can "show how much they love their woman". "How else can two months salary last forever." What a fucking crock. Half the marriages end in divorce, with the woman getting half the man's property and getting to keep the "symbol of their love" to boot. yobo, I hope you appreciate the wife you have because VERY FEW women are as smart and thoughtful as she is. |

There are other threads on the subject. You should search for them.
Bottom line -- diamonds are vastly overpriced and dropping in value. A simple rule is that the more you spend the more you will get screwed. Get a synthetic diamond because they are cheaper and even jewelers can't tell the difference, anyway. Then figure that whatever you spent is money down the tubes because you will be lucky to sell it for twenty percent of what you paid for it. If someone shows you or gives you an appraisal on a gem, ask them if they will buy the stone at that price. Their answer will tell you something about appraisals. |

I bought all the ring I could afford...... .4 if I remember right.
Later (20 years) I bought her the ring I would have liked. We buy and measure guns. Most women have a different scale. My wife is not out of place with our doctor's wife. She feels good and I feel good that she does. |
|
That right there is the root reason men buy diamonds for women. |

Grab a pair of high-heels, pink lipstick and work Bourbon Street lol I know what you mean though...Blame DeBeers |

I got lucky and was given a family stone by my Mom (thank you mom). All I had to do was pick out the ring and have the diamond set. That said, I did a LOT of looking. Do not buy a pre-set stone, buy a stone, and then buy a setting for it and have it set. You will save a pile of cash. Preferably buy the diamond from a different source than the ring (online, a diamond outlet, whatever), and have a ring picked out. This gives you flexibility and negotiating power with a jeweler.
I just realized, that had I bought what I was looking at my wife's ring would have almost matched what I spent renovating a kitchen. Shooter |

The sense in which you mean it is not nearly as reliable as the sense in which I meant it. |

SHE picked out a fake! Then, simple bands (<$50, for the pair).
It ain't about the jewelry! And,I was lucky to get one who knows that.(I did give her a S&W Model 60 snubbie, and a 686 for me-now THAT is wuv!) |
|
It's unwise to start a marriage on a lie. If you're going to buy a fake, let it be known. If you HAVE to buy a fake and tell her its REAL because you can't afford what she wants...you have bigger problems than picking out a ring you both like. One simple fact guys never think about...the ring should match the size of her hand. Me? I'm petite and my ring size is 4 1/2 -- a big diamond would look silly on me. My friend was given a 7 carat engagement ring and her ring size is a 3 1/2, do I need to tell you how silly a 7 carat solitaire looks on a girl with hands this small and weighs only 110 lbs? Even she complained that it was too big for her. It looks like it came out of a gum ball machine it is so big. Moral: Marry a small woman, you won't have to spend as much money on her ring. :) |

+ a gazillion. If she wants a bigger diamond than I can pay cash for she wants a richer husband. |
