Do the filters on smoking pipes really do anything? Are they worth the extra hassel and money? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

They don't help to any degree worth the money. What they tend to do is dehydrate the smoke, which makes it taste worse, and to take away some of the more pleasant flavors.

Pull it out and throw it away.  Learn how to tamp a bowl properly and don't be so stingy that you smoke it untill you suck ashes down your goozle.
