I have a couple and even tho they don't make it on the cool list much anymore I still enjoy hauling them out and shooting them. Colt detective, LW agent and a Colt 1911 MkIII. I would like to shoot that one more but except for the common parts there are not many replacement parts for them. I run about 100 rounds a year thru her and still laugh when someone sees me loading 38spl into her and start yelling that it takes 38super.

I own one, but my wife has pretty much taken it over as her handgun of choice.
I have a S&W .38 special which I gave to the misus for her protection. I haven't had the chance to try it tho.
Charter Arms 38spl
Tarus 605 357 mag Ruger GP100 357 I shoot 38 spl in them all fairly regular. |
Maybe I'm just wierd, but I discovered this past summer that double action revolvers are more fun to shoot than any other handgun type. I love shooting the 1911, 229, all the others, but I always have the biggest smile when shooting the ol' S&W model 66.
Not weird at all. Wheel guns are fun, and often underrated. I shoot .38 in a ruger sp101 on a regular basis. |
I have a Taurus with a 2" barrel, I got it in trade with something else. I take it almost every time I go to the range.
I hate having to admit that I'm a MUCH better shot with the S&W 10 than I am with the Kimber
Hell yeah...
SW snub bobbed hammer 5 shot, and a Taurus Mod 80 in NRA official grade condition FUBAR. Got the Mod 80 from a friend trying to dump it to get funds for a Glock...call it TheNorm's buyback program, I'll buy your crap as long as you are going to get something cool with the money. I keep a few wheelies around to train with. I think it's good to cross train, both for being prepared, and just for fun. A little "gun strange" if your main carry guns don't get jealous. |
you can't beat the 90$/1000 for decent quality commercial reloads, either.
!st Gen colt SAA in .38 special. I shot it a few times until I found out how much it was worth. Now its cleaned and in my safe.
I have one.... I took it out a while back and fired a bunch of lead commercial reloads thru it. Good lord those things lead up! I scrubbed forever and I cant get it all out.
I will never shoot it again, if I ever get it clean. If I ever do shoot it.... it will be only with really hot copper jacketed .357's |
About 60% of all of the rounds I shoot in my 686Plus are .38spl.
Sometimes I run .38spl+P, I love to shoot .357Mag but damn it is expensive. |
I have virtually no problem with leading in my barrel... |
I have a S&W 3.5" mod 64 SS that I shoot at least once
a month . It lives within reach of my right hand in an under counter holster in my computer desk loaded up with 125gr SJHP +P rounds . What's not to like . It can sit there ready to go for years on end with no ill effects . Even if by the odd chance a round doesn’t fire . The next one is a trigger squeeze away |
Nice, I know where two 41s? are for sale but we'll have to see if they are there in a few months. I'm on a buy freeze for awhile. |
My wife has a Model 60 3" she keeps in her vehicle. She has an old Model 14 6" she uses for plinking. She REALLY likes that one because she can shoot it well (long sight radius). She just finished loading several thousand wadcutters for the upcoming season. She's ready.
S&W Model 10-5, is the wife’s home defense pistol now, I‘m stuck with the SIG P225.
I have an early 52-1 I shoot in matches along with my 41's.
I can't bring myself to drill the 52 for a dot though. |
My dad gave me a Victory Model Smith which my wife now claims. I bought her an airweight Smith for Christmas so I could have my Victory back. She cannot reliably load a semiauto.
.38 has made many a man die. When I get crap from some one I ask them to go downrange and show me just how ineffective they are. |
I have a blue 6" Colt Diamondback revolver in 38spl. Looks and feels like a smaller version of a Python.
I've only got .357's, but the 686+ Hi Viz ICORE gun doesn't see anything but lead .38 reloads.
Like BarryTolar, I shoot better with a round gun. |
Well I wish I knew what the deal was. I probably popped off about 200 rounds in the course of an hour..... so it did get kinda warm.... but the bore was THICK with lead... like I had gooped it in there. |

5 shot snubby DAO Taurus. Carry in a fanny pack with a 6 Bianchi strip - smooth but heavy trigger pull
All bullets are not equal. Maybe you got a batch of cheapies? |
The bullets were probably too hard and too small. "Hard cast" is not always better, especially at .38 pressures. |
You got a bunch of soft swaged bullets, and if they were runnin a bit fast......lots of leading. If you were in my area I'd give you some decent stuff and I'd bet you would like it. |
same its my carry gun. Practice with 38's and carry .357. |
Even today, a small five-shot .38 Spl. revolver is in a class of it’s own for personal defense. However, larger revolvers IMHO should at a minimum be in .357 Magnum.
Lewis Lead Remover (copper mesh you push down the bore) Sounds like the reloader used soft lead bullets. I’ve fired all sorts of .38 Spl unjacketed lead bullets to include +P 158 grain RN and HP with no problems. |
of course! i shoot my .22 and .38 all the time... they're all i have
Taurus 38 spl...take it every time I hit the range ..kill at least a couple boxes..
Colt .38 Army Special from my Grandpa. I may have put <100 rounds through it.
S&W Stainless Chiefs Spl and Air Weight hammerless, rarely shoot either one. They are my summer carry for shorts and Tshirt weather. If I had to use one, it would be up close and personal and I get plenty of trigger time with other guns so my skill level is still there.
TY, i had to search long and hard to find it. FWW the izh-35m is half the price of the model 41 and it will shoot rings around it. its sort of the dirty little secret in bullseye shooter circles |
All my .38's are S&W Airweight Mod. 15 Mod. 10 x3 (4" 2" and my PPC gun) They all get used regularly... especially when introducing new people to the joys of shootin' |
I have a S&W 686. I just shot it last Friday although I don't shoot it very often. I used to shoot it all the time as it was the first handgun I ever bought. I just don't like cleaning revolvers very much. But when I shoot it I normally shoot .38 Special ammo, handloaded, of course.
I will be shooting this handgun more in the coming Spring. Then the weather will be nice enough to allow me to go outside more and set up my chronograph. I have some ideas for some .38 Special +P loadings I want to experiment with. |
Still keep and occaisionally carry my old off-duty/plain clothes 5 shot chief (It has alot of sentimental value).
I don't own a .38, but I do have a S&W 686 .357 Mag. with a 6" barrel that I've put more .38 Special loads through than .357. It's an accurate gun but I haven't shot it in quite a while. I did buy my sister a Rossi .38 snub ten years ago and we went shooting last week with that gun. I had forgotten how fun a little .38 snubbie was to shoot.
The first ammo I ever reloaded was .38 Special 158 grain wadcutters back in early 1989. I had a 8 3/8" 686 at the time and it shot those keg-shaped slugs very well. IIRC the loads only had about three grains of W231 in them. |
I have two Taurus. Well, one's a .357 magnum.
When I take people out shooting, sometimes I'll load 5 .38s and one .357 as the last round. The look on people's faces is priceless! |
Won a S&W 442 at a match a few years ago but I wasn't happy with the accuracy so I traded it.
Down to one wheel now; a Model 19-3 with 2.5" barrel. I ordered a bobbed hammer from the back of the Brownell's catalog and installed a Miculek hammer spring and a lighter rebound spring to turn it into one smooth ass DAO bulldog. Dehorned the rear sight blade too. One of my favorite guns. |
I have a police trade in S&W Model 10 (heavy barrel) that my parents gave me one year for Christmas. The trigger is smooth and it's surprisingly accurate. It will never replace my Series '70 as my defense weapon of choice, but I love that .38 for casual plinking.
I've got the S&W model 66 as well. I don't think I've ever handled a more accurate revolver. Is yours pinned and recessed or did that only come on some of them? MJD |
