Except for SWAT are any gun mags worth paying for? I flip through them at the book store but it seems that they are mostly paid advertising for different gun makers.

Any of them any good?

Most if not all make their money from the advertizers. Ever notice there will be an article about some gun and then there is a 1 or 2 page add by the manufacturer in the same issue.  They are pushing product. Do they ever say a gun  is NG or that they had problems with it?

I used to love Small Arms Review

They did an amazing piece on the development of the new Russian Assault rifle, with pictures of close to 20 prototypes (the first were Bullpups) before settling on that new weird timed pulse 2 shots before recoil happens version.

They had an awesome interview with a Russian Special Forces soldier on equipment, loadout, tactics and battles in Afghanistan.  That article ran in Shotgun news a few months later.

What, no 'Gun Tests' readers?

No advertising = a good thing

Good concept but many of them are idiots.

I have an issue where they had a AR-15 postban carbine and noted the buttstock has an area for a clean kit just like the full size rifle but for some reason didn't have a trap door to keep it in place.

I used to read that until I relized they would do tests that you and I could pretty much just look at the guns in comparision and tell you which one was the better.
I think they had a test between a hi-point handgun and a Sig or something like that. Well, guess which one was the "best buy" ? Yeah, the Sig. They did other tests like this and it got to the point of being like........well.......duh!
"Which handgun lost it's front site after 6 shots? The Ruger Super Redhawk or the _place your low quality handgun here_."

+1 for Gun Tests.  I like that they actually buy a gun and run it.  Who cares if they don't know every detail of the AR15?  They can still evaluate reliability, accuracy, and trigger pull.

I have to concur. I still get gun tests because there is nothing out there better, but I sometimes wonder about their methods of comparison.

I wish they had a little more funding behind them so that they could actually be the consumer reports of guns.  But like I said, I'll still keep my subscrition.

I enjoy reading small arms review too,

It all depends where your interests lie. Most here are into the AR-15 and probably more into the "black ridle" stuff. I like just about anything that burns powder, my favorites are?

+1 on American Rifleman.  I used to get Shooting Times and Guns and Ammo, was slack in reading them and they just piled up so I canceled the subscriptions.  I get Dillon's Blue Press too, but it's a more of a catalog but always has a good article or 2, and of course the BOTD on the cover.

Used to get Shotgun News, 3x a month is too much, they have an option just to get it once a month, got kind of boring since each new issue was about 90% of the old issue's contents.  Fred of Fred's Stocks always had a good rant.

I subscribe to Guns, American Handgunner, Police Marksman, Shotgun News , American Rifleman and a couple of career specific pubs that I guess could be seen as gun magazines of a sort.
