Do they work to the point where you can tell?  Anybody ever tried this?  I'm on about my 5th novel in a few years where one of the characters is using a soda bottle to muffle a .22.  I don't live in an area where I could test it and I imagine the guys at the range would frown on it...

I tried it the other day...the results were inconclusive.  The only thing that didn't sound normal was the Beretta 92, and it didn't sound quiet...just different.  I'm still working on it.  If I had to give an answer, I'd say "don't bet your life on it".

Yikes! is this a lockable topic?  I was just on wikipedia and their hit is,

"Suppressors can be improvised with any baffling material (Pillow, potato, plastic bottle, etc); These are only marginally useful, and often dangerous to the user. In areas where suppressors are regulated, improvised suppressors may also be illegal, whether they actually reduce the sound of the firearm or not. This law is controversial, however, since improvised suppressors are usually regular household items."

But if I f#cked up and didn't realiize it, my apologies to the board...
