Several 10/22s in the mid nineties when Ruger came out with all of those Laminate Stock guns....very pretty.
Never had a problem but I live in AZ where guns are pretty common.......YMMV. ETA: You're in AL...you shouldn't have a problem. |

I bought a Marlin 60SB from a local Wal-Mart. It went without a hitch. Of course it helped that the associate behind the sporting goods counter actually knew what he was doing.

no problem with buying the rifles.I had to order them since they where youth models.just had problems ordering accesories for one of the rifles.

Winchester edit Had to wait a while because they had to get it from the back. The thing about walmart (at least mine) is that they have a book with all their guns that are "in the back" and they have very few on display. You have to keep chatting them up about current specials and reduced prices whenever you go in. |

I bought a Remington 1100 from them. It took a bit longer than it does at the local bubba shop, they would not sell me shotgun shells at the same time, and someone had to walk to the front of the store with me. None of that is a big deal IMHO. It was a good price and the shotgun is great.

They had a ridiculously low blow-out price (I had an FFL at the time and couldn't get them as cheap!) on Remington 1100s several years ago & I bought 3 at once from a local W*M. Even though I was buying them to enter in my book & resell and had a copy of my FFL with me, they made me buy them the "traditional" way (DL, NICS) as if it were a personal purchase...

Yes, a Remmington 870. Went smoothly, the ammo/gun counter employees knew what they were doing. They even carried it out of the store for me, what service.

Waited 20 min. to get service, even after picking up the phone and calling for them myself. First kid to show up at the counter has no clue, and calls an assistant mgr. 15 minutes later, asst. mgr. shows up.
The asst. mgr couldn't find the template that they have to put over the paperwork to figure out which portions they had to fill out, where I sign, etc. Reading is fundamental. Go back in a couple days to pick up my Marlin 60. (I love IL gun laws  ) Different asst. mgr this time. She doesn't have the key to get me my gun. She calls store mgr on intercom. 20 minutes later, store mgr shows up. Doesn't have key on them, but thinks it's in the office. 30 minutes later, comes back with key. They go to the back, and bring me the wrong rifle. I produce receipt, they go back to the stock room. 15 minutes later, they finally produce the correct rifle. For the $20 bucks I saved buying it there, I'll buy somewhere else from competent help from now on. |

Never had a problem. I've bought a couple of Remington 700s, a Ruger P-89, Colt 1911, Ruger 10/22 and a Winchester 1300, none of which were seconds like some proclaim. Bought ammo with every one of them.

Yes, a 12 guage shotgun,
The first one only had the one in the case, but couldn't sell it because it was not in their books  Second place I went had it and it was pretty smooth, just a quick call in and an escort to your car and you are done. |

Sadly, Wal Mart doesn't sell firearms in Commiefornia anymore. Lots of Arfcomers bitch about Wal Mart, just be glad yours still sells guns and ammo.

Have bought several over the years. Nothing stands out about anything out of the ordinary though. Someone once did tell me some of the cheap prices you find on some hunting rifles at wal-mart is because they are of a lesser grade than ones that are sold at bass pro or someplace like that. Don't quote me on that one cause I really don't know. Anyway you should go at a non-peek time. Good Hunting!!!

well me and my friend bought 870's there and mine has broke twice they sent it in the first time but it took a while so i didn't give it to them the second time my friends ate 2 choke tubes and then he bought a tube from MC sports and that works but he also bought 2 .22 mags that worked fine from there.

I bought an 870 about 4 years ago... when younger, got a 10/22 and a H&R break action 20 gauge. All went smooth as silk.

I bought my brother a Ruger 10/22 for a graduation/birthday present. It was fairly painless, it just took a while because nobody there had done a firearms sale before. The manager had to call another store manager for information. It went a lot easier because I had my CCW though, so they didn’t have to call NICS.

I bought one 10/22 and vowed to not do it agian. It was cheaper, but the service at a gunshop was well worth the extra $$.
But each shift is different! That is the problem with large stores, diffrent employees on differnet days. |

Yes, a special order Marlin. It cost about 30% less than if I had bought it in a local gunshop. It took awhile due to being a special order going through the layaway department,but the 4473 process was painless.

Picked up a Savage .22LR boltgun last year around this time. Took a while for them to get their ducks in a line, but I paid an excellent price. Had no issue buying ammo and mags at the same time, though they did escort me and my package to the door. I asked what if I wanted to do some more shopping, the manager quite nicely asked me just to lock the gun up in the car first and asked if I had a cart I wanted him to watch in the meantime.
This was a PA walmart, NJ stores don't sell guns or ammo. |

I bought a 10/22 at my local Walmart a couple of months ago. It took them about an hour to figure out how to do the 4473 (following the detailed instructions in their P&P manual), so any money I saved was wasted by the extra 50 minutes of my life they stole.
The best part of the purchase was the assistant manager who had to walk the gun out and put it in my car. She was telling me that they wouldn't sell me ammo for the gun today, and that she always felt much safer carrying the firearms out and putting them in the buyer's cars. I said "Oh really" and opened the back of my Yukon so she could see the 20 cases or so of ammo in the back. She got this shellshocked looked and wandered away mumbling to herself. |

I've bought one and had one bought for me for Christmas last year. Bought my Mossberg and it went smooth other then having to go back the next day to get it, stupid Illinois waiting periods. My stepdad bought me a 10/22 for Christmas last year and said he had a major hassle with them not having anyone who could fill out the proper forms, but come back tomarrow and we'll give you a discount for you trouble. So he went back the next day and they had sold the stailess model he wanted to buy. went to another wal-mart and bought the blued model got it home gave it to me Christmas eve and the store didn't take the trigger lock off of it. So I didn't even get to shoot it till Sunday. Plus had to make an extra 40 mile one way trip to have the lock removed. So all in all I've had decent luck with them. just be sure to check over your purchase very carefully before you leave the store.

Hell. My two local walmarts don't even sell firearms anymore. The entire area has been taken over by suburbanites who are afraid of guns. They don't even have ammo on the shelf except at the beginning of hunting season adn then it's only 12 and 20ga game loads.

I bought a winchester 1300 (looked like a defender only with a 22" barrel and 5 round tube) at 3am with a couple boxes of buckshot, paid cash at the register. I was 18 in Iowa, no issues whatsoever.

Bought a Marlin 60 about a year ago. Dipstick managers didn't know what they were doing. The assistant manager has to fill out the form, then the store manager checks it over. Problem was, the store manager was taking her lunch break at the end of her shift and wouldn't come do the sale. I was basically told, sorry, we can't do the sale now, come back tomorrow. I had them call the local supercenter, they had one, I went down there to get it. Transaction went smooth from there on out. Would I buy from wally world again? Maybe, just not the one near me. MJD

I bought a Marlin 336 at the local walmart a couple years back. Back when I used to get delayed on background checks every freakin time. Had to go back the next day to pick it up. The guys there knew what they were doing, and it wasn't a bad experience. A manager did walk me out the side door.
Wish I'd kept that rifle... I sold it about a year later. Now I find myself wanting another 336 in .30-30. |

I had heard that as well. I talked to a friend who worked behind the counter and he told me that the guns were not factory seconds or of any lower quality than other guns from the same manufacturer. He said it was a cobination of volume purchase (often #units/year guarantee in advance) combined with sometimes special package deals (Wal-Mart guns may or may not include the extra magazine or a sling or a coupon for goodies). The full factory warranty is in effect. This makes sense. It would not make sense for Winchester or Remington to establish production controls and standards for Wal-Mart guns separate from non-Wal-Mart guns. Any reduction in cost would be upset by segregate parts-supply, warehousing and stocking efforts. No corporate lawyer in the World would let a manufacturer sell guns that didn't meet the same safety and strength standards as rifles not sold to Wal-Mart. Lets face it, the models sold by Wal-Mart are not "custom" guns as sold by anybody. Get them in the box and out the door is the name of the game for these models. In answer to the original question; Yes, I have purchased a couple guns from Wal-Mart. A 10/22 and a 20ga 870. One transaction with my friend behind the counter went as flawless as a Gun Show sale. The other with the less experienced clerk took a bit longer but still hastle-free. They would not sell me ammo with the gun sale even in a different caliber than my purchase and they did walk me out the front door and well into the parking lot before turning over the box to me. |

I bought one probably 11 or 12 years ago. (before Wally World was EVILLLL
 )You could still order handguns out of their catalogue, but most stores were no longer stocking them. I was thumbing thru the catalogue at the gun counter, when the guy notices I'm looking at .45's and says, I have a Springfield Armory .45, Stainless Steel. It was a layaway, but the guy never came back. He knocked off something like $75 or so, and I snatched it up. Haven't bought one since. But, my only firearm purchase at Wally World was a good one! |

I have bought several. If you want a smooth and easy transaction then your best bet is to go in during the day while the dept manager is working. Deal directly with the dept manager, they usually are the most knowledgable regarding the 4473 forms because they are the ones that check them over everday. Otherwise it is hit or miss with the "normal" associates.
As to them not selling ammo at the same time the gun is sold, they are completely wrong, and it is a misinterpretation of policy. Policy states that no customer will have in their possesion ammo and the gun at the same time in the store.(doesn't apply to CCW) Policy also states that a salaried member of management must escort the gun out of the store. Therefore if the manager is carrying the gun the customer wouldn't be in possesion of ammo and gun at the same time, so it isn't against policy. |

Bought a Remington 597 as a gift for my cousin. Took several minutes for them to retrieve it from the back, but the paperwork was fairly painless. As best I remember, they accepted my CCW as a substitute for the NICS check. They did walk me to the door with it, so I felt like a kindergartener. I might buy one from them again if the price is exceptionally good.
