I stayed at a Marriott Hotel last night in Atlanta.

The elevator had no 13th floor button...went right from 12 to 14.

I didn't realize that some hotels still did this.  All the planes I fly have Row 13 (saved for the phat bastard with a crying baby, but that's for another post).

Are you superstitious?

This is slightly different, but when I lived in Waco, there was the pre-fix 666 for phone numbers.  I refused it and ended up with 420.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm not stupid, either - I always tie my left shoe first.

What......You mean like the dopes who scratch a scratch ticket a specific way thinking the numbers will magically change to a winning ticket?

I don't believe in any of that shit.  I break mirrors, walk under ladders, tell the government to go fuck themselves over the phone(you do know its bugged right?) cross the paths of black cats, put in $13 dollars worth of gas in my vehicles.

Superstition is for third world morons.

I can't make myself stop believing that when my left ear rings, someone is speaking well of me and when my right ear rings, someone is bad-mouthing me.

Of course both of my ears ring all the time.

In the course of my martial arts training (especially fencing) I practice many Shinto based rituals.

But I do them more for tradition and custom than any adherence to the religion.

As close as I get to an actual religious practice is some some zen mindsets and practice of zazen.

I used to subscribe to many superstitions until I learned the root reasons for their existence.

I used to be supertitious.  Then once I had all my good mojo lined up and bought a losing powerball lotto ticket.

Now I'm just bitter and cynical.

Goes back to the religious beliefs of people like the Druids who believed everything had it's own "spirit" (trees, rivers, rocks, etc.) and knocking on wood had a conjuring effect on the generally benevolent spirits of trees that the wood came from.

Would that be the "morning wood" by any chance?

When staying in hotels I always check the picture hanging over the bed. If it's not screwed to the wall I take it down.

I'm not superstitious. A guy I used to work with lost an eye when a picture fall off the wall of his hotel room.

FWIW the small town jury took pity on the small town hotel owner over the yankee business man and he only got $50,000.

I won't eat shark meat.
I surf and dive and if I can do something, however superstitious it may be, to keep big teeth-filled fish away, I'm down with it. It also helps to not have a goodie bag filled with bleeding fish or to not surf the outer island point break that doubles as a sea lion rookery.

I don't eat the yellow snow.

I have a small shrine of broken parts from my car in a dedicated area of my garage, soon to be graced with the presense of candles and maybe a picture of a few driving gods to pray to everytime I go to the track.

If I shoot down a balloon during my flight it is a good omen for the rest of the week. Hey, don't laugh. I haven't crashed yet during a week with a balloon bogey getting splashed.
