I want a dog that gets no larger than 25-30 pounds. Has to have short hair also. I love beagles, but I have always had a hard time getting them to behave. Labs are great, but get bigger than what I want. I'll probably end up with a beagle, but will actually spend money and take it to an obedience school this time
 Any other breeds that I should look at? |

+1 to hell with some fancy bred dog. there are thousands of good loyal loving dogs in shelters that need homes. |

I have an English Setter and they are awesome loving dogs and smart as hell.
I don't think you should get one if you aren't a bird hunter though. They truly live for it. They also run a little heavier than you are looking for. They shed some. Just thought I'd point that all out given that Redbeard mentioned them. I am not sure I will ever get anything else though. My mutt has spoiled me for all others. |

Whatever you get check it's pedigree out and avoid pet stores, puppy mills, etc. They don't give a shit what they breed.
Border Collies are fantastic dogs also but they have long hair and will herd you. What they are bred for. I almost took one from some folks who had a resort in Canada. Wonderful dog. Just incredible. They didn't like it and didn't treat it the greatest. We liked the dog and they offered her to us. We were living in an apt then or it would have been mine. Still feel kind of bad about it. |

I have three mutts.
Cody is mostly black lab. Gidget is mostly golden retriever. Haley is an enormous mix of retriever and possibly bloodhound. Her paws are completely webbed. Defnitely look at the animal shelter. Oft times you can find full blood dogs there. My mom, for example, got a full blood Great Pyrennes from our local shelter. Good luck.

Look at the Rat Terriers. Similar to the Jack Russel but longer legs, a little more muscular looking. Very good personality. Big dog in a small package.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi
25-30 pounds. Furry little guys, but even short hair dogs will get hair everywhere.... sometimes even more than longer hair dogs. At least you can brush the long hair dogs and pull hairs from the brush instead of the floor. |

A big +1 My wife had one when we were teens, It was a great dog. You really should pay attention to what a dog was bread to do, it has a lot to do with their caracter. Beagles were bred to run thru the woods chasing a smell. They are almost uncontrollable. And god are they dumb. YMMV, but I've seen very few smart ones. |
