They could recoup millions of dollars in doing so, instead they spend money to destroy them.  They could easily be shipped back over here and demilled into kits.  Many collectors would pay top dollar for an Iraqi Tabuk AK or the many other versions over there.  Discuss.

because most of those weapons are automatic, and "We the People" do not have the right to bear those types of arms.

Its cheaper for them to blow them up on site, denying their use to insurgents. The last thing the .gov is going to think about is US collectors.

Yeah!  There would be no administrative concerns with a venture like that!

Because the military mission does not include "send various and sundry weapons back to US for distribution among various weapons kit wholesalers."

It's a fucking WAR not a God-damned scavenger hunt!!!

I really wish they could do that, I REALLLLLLY do. but could you imagine the headlines?

"FULLY AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUNS BEING STOLEN FROM IRAQIS ARE BEING SOLD BY THE GOVERNMENT IN THE US!!!!!!!!!!!"

tahts the last kind of publicity we need. Although i would LOVE to have an IRAQI AK.............

I've never seen any of them, but being from a 3rd world country, I would surmise that those guns would probably be in pretty poor condition, barring those confiscated from Saddam himself.

What I want to know is why we mare blowing up seized weapons with one hand and then buying new AKs for the Iraqi security forces with the other.

Unit trophy collections most likely.

Because of the "once a machinegun, always a machinegun" almost all seized weapons would have to be demilled into kits.  I agree that it is the last thing they are worried about, but why not find ways to make some of those billions of U.S. dollars back that have been spent over there.  The kits would then be built over here with the correct number of U.S. parts as U.S. rifles.

It sounds easy to sell kits to collectors, but it's easier just to blow them up. Cheaper, too, even considering the money they would make on kit sales.

Well, there a plenty fo Yugoslavian SKS's and Yugo AK kits flooding the U.S. right now, maybe Iraqi arms will do the same in 10 years?

Provide me some facts showing they'd recoup millions after going through the process that would be involved with that and maybe I wont say how retarded-5-year-old this thread is.

It's not a stupid idea - may not be currently feasible, but it's not stupid.

Why don't the kit importers go over there, and offer to destroy the weapons, and just demill them.  Then import them as kits?

Most importantly, it's Bush's fault they are not being sent back, him being so anti-gun and all.

benefits = money from collectors willing to buy them (like me)

are vastly outweighed by

costs = setting up infrastructure to de-mill thousands of AKs, shipping them, getting everything licensed and legalized

and

risks = bad publicity, anti-gun people spinning things the wrong way, weapons getting into wrong hands and being used in a high publicity event...

it's a nice fantasy, but as a business venture it's simply not worth it.

The military is in the business of blowing shit up, kicking ass, and taking names.

Not scavenging shitty AK's for a profit.

Because the US government isn't in competition with the private sector to make a profit.

If you start using tax dollars to supply demand, you will soon have an economy in the tank.  Private business can't compete with a govt that doesn't care what it's costs are, and has unlimited bankroll of the taxpayer.  Kill off a couple companies and the only source then becomes the Army.  So now instead of a profitable business using funds it earned to finance future sales, the Army uses your taxpayer dollars to fund it's own sales that it doesn't care too much about.  It's a formula for disaster as far as economics go.

That's why there are laws against the US government competing with the private sector.

So the answer to your question is because it's against the law.

Our operating costs are staggering.  AK kits wouldn't even put a scratch in it.

Because the Left would start saying"No war for AK's!"

or how 'bout..."George Bush invaded Iraq for their AK's"

Like that would be wrong

All captured AK, RPK, PPK, RPG & Dragunovs were turned over to the Iraqi Army and Police. Everything else was destroyed.

And because as somebody stated it would cost more to do that than gross profit taken in.  The result would be a loss.  The government would have to hire or contract people to ship them, demill them then sell them. Add in typical govt. inefficiency, you know the agency that would have to be created to oversee this, and the bureacrats needed.

Probably because they're selling them to another country that is currently our ally but will be our enemy in 3-5 years.

Here's another wack idea... why not give them to the Iraqi Army?
