ok guys, what in your opinion is the ulitimate 4x4 vehicle available to civilians (by this i mean truck, thus voiding any and all TRACK vehicles) now i know im gonna get Hummer here a lot but in my experinces they arent all they are cracked up to be...half-shafts and CV joints are easy to blow and in all reality hard and expensive to find...
so, what do you all think? (also, do the old (1970's) chevy shortbed pickups have the same wheelbase as the old Blazers?) |

well, first, teh 1970s truck thing. i dont know for sure, but i have one of these trucks you speak of and i think they are teh same, but why do you need to know that if i may ask.
as far as the first question. hard to say, with all the aftermarket stuff taht can be done. i would say stock from the factory, probly like a lang rover. land rover defender 90 perhaps. aftermarket the sky is the limit. i think the best big tired mudding vehical is the 70s ealry 80s silverados, but i guess im partial |

Pinz's were made by Steyer Puch in Austria. Air cooled, portal axles, locking front/rear diffs& transfer case, all independent. 4x4 or 6x6, soft or hardtops. Production was from 1971 to 1976 (??). Now made in the UK with a watercooled diesel. Mogs still have much better articulation. Either will drive you stark fvcking nuts on the freeway, as well as lead the way for HMVEE's off the road. www.expedition-imports.com has pictures of both. hanko |

I also agree with the Unimog recomendation--portal axles, decent suspension, insanely low gears, and mercedes reliability. edited to say humvees IMO are useless for anything other than mud or sand--they high center very easily, no suspension/articulation, the cv halfshafts are garbage, they're too wide for any real trail work, and theyre slow. No tracks do not disqualify vheicles from either road use or civilian ownership. Over a thousand Weasles are still on the road- or water- they are amphibious and are often registered as boats as well. They have 1.5psi ground pressure so they will cross snow- and wont damage pavement. And there cheap too, a fully restored one isnt worth more than tricked out late model pickup or Jeep. Restorable wrecks are only a few grand. |

Well guys I have 2 trucks for you, but I will say Hummerfs are ALL they are made out to be Get an old mil. there is a guy in AZ. that sales them(do a web search I don't the site off hand)
I had a 98 Chevy 2500 4X4 , I was an old work truck but the Co. whent under and I got it for 2,000 with 75,000 on it but with a new moter with only 3,000 mils on it so it was not a bad deal. The damn thing would good over any thing,it was a 2nd truck and I did now give a damn if I F@#$ed it up so I did some real nutty stuff it that truck. The only time it stoped was under water but it ran the next day. Last year I got a S-10 cuz it small and would not use a lot of gas but I did not think I had much of a truck. Boy did I find out that I did! The truck is only like 3,000lbs it will not get stuck is any thing it's not that good in sand and mud deeper that 2 or 3 feet but rocks and stuff .......on prob. ! I know my S-10 is not the badest truck ever but it is damn well the best samll truck. Other American trucks are not fare off but it's funny to me how the Jap truck gyts talked and talke abot the full size Toyota and it's sad in truth. Did you guys know it only has like 240hp? My S-10 had 190hp to start them I did some work on the ECM and got a flowmaster and K&N and nowI get 238hp and 298lbs. Thats sad man my lil S-10 would past for a full size at Toyota[:O] If want to buy a new truck now I think it would be the new HD, 8.1L big block[<]:)]THATS GOO SHIT MAN! I'm not a Ford guy(like I diid to tell you) but there may be a new big block in place of the V10 in 03, that would be cool. All America car Co.s should have some balls and make the good again. |

I saw something in SF today first driving, then parked on 8th St. Don't think it had front drivetrain but seemed to max out legal dimensions in all directions-and amphibious. Looked like a street legal tour boat. Imagine about a forty foot semi chassis/drivetrain with a boat set on it. Vertical sides (high), and a pitched roof on top the length of the vessel extending over the front windscreen. Open between roof and gunwales. Speakers mounted to support posts. All white, no markings, looked new. Definitely not a planing hull.

Guns and 4bys both,seems to me its more the operator,I mean I've laughed pretty hard at some preppy types dug in really deep in impressive machines...That aside though,I fished along time with a guy who had a shortbed Jeep pickup with Quadra trak and a big V-8,went way in and never got stuck,then again that boy could drive.

except my '96 s-10 zr2 with the 4.3L vortec engine. it can go! and decent articulation, some cargo room, and tough as hell! course, its in the shop for radiator work, but after that IT WILL ROCK ASS! and who is this 'hanko' guy anyway? ALL YOUR 'o's' ARE BELONG TO ME! |

Stock it has the 351M/400, NP 435 4 spd trans with the 6.68:1 first gear ratio, NP 205 T-case, Solid axle Dana 44 front axle and Ford 9" in the rear. In addition to being bulletproof you can get parts anywhere for everything on the truck. In 1978 the only emissions device you have is the EGR valve.

UNIMOG, without a doubt. And I have driven em all. In fact, I am gonna sell mine only to concentrate on my collection of US military vehicles.
That or the M-422 Mighty Mite. Air cooled V-4, all aluminum body, independant suspension, total wieght 1700 pounds, less than 3000 made and only used by the USMC... I start restoring mine as soon as my M-274A2 mule is done. It is one hellva vehicle itself! I like Weasels, but damm tracks are getting to be a bitch to find anymore. |

Hmm, too hard to say IMHO. Its kind of like the right tool for the job. For general use with out modifications I'd have to go with the Pinzguar. I just can't think of any other vehicle that has as much in a stock type package.

For complete off road capability and reliability, Steve is right. Last I have heard the Scorpion's are still in the final R&D stages. They were used during the 2001 off road challange as a recovery vehicle. The Sniper won.

IIRC the Lamborghini LM002 was designed to be able to do about 140mph in the desert. I think the Swiss military had a couple test units that were armored to boot.

The Lambo LM0002 was derived from a military project they were working on for some Middle Eastern country that fell through. A Saudi prince had one made with opening top and power-lift chair in the back so he can pop up for falconry. Ms. Tina "The Legs" Turner owns one. Last time I saw one it was in West Hollywood, CA for $180,000 in 1992, used. There were talk of reviving the beast, so start saving your pennies.

My Samurai will go places the Hummer would need a helicopter to get into and out of. A friend has a hummer and he can't get around the block without a breakdown. The samurai can go through place in two wheel(with lockers , i'll admit)that the Hummer can barly go in allwheel. I won't even go into the fact that the Hummer can't go far without a gas tanker in the rear of the column.

Kpel - no it didn't look like that, except in concept. This thing was about a third higher and mavbe more long. Sides flat and vertical. Roof same idea though. Draw a line across top of wheels. Now place hull with v-bottom at or above that line. I wasn't kidding when I said max legal dimension in all directions. Hull had no accomodations for wheels, it was above them.

We just put a edelbrock 600cfm carb, and edlebrock manifold. Along with a MSD 6AL, Pro-billet distributor, and 8.5mm superconductor wires. We just need to finish up little stiff and get the distributor timed and the carb tuned. The old EGR passages were 90% blocked. Cant wait to see how much better it runs. It also had headers and true dual 40 series flowmasters on 16/38.5-15 swampers. |

I'd downright love to have a Kenworth SUV THAT BIG! Whoa nelly! I'd want to repipe the exhaust though so that it was plumbed out the sides by the rear tires, that way I could pull up next to all the earth loving hippies and fill their car with carbon monoxide fumes!
I've stood next to one of the Lambo 4x4s, it's an awesome sight seeing one of those things on the road. It leaves you with the impression of a hotrod Hummer when standing next to it. I've also seen one of, or a ripoff, of the sniper while coming back from the Pismo beach area. They were towing it in the right lane of the 101 north and I must have blocked traffic for around 5-10 minutes while I drove a long side of the thing, it was only a two lane road north of SLO but I'll be damned if I wasn't gonna get a REAL good look at the thing. |
