I'm going insane. My daughter's Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator stopped working. An hour on the phone with what Adobe calls tech support and the answer is remove the program and reinstall. Cannot install without uninstalling first. OK, fine. I go to Windows add/remove programs and there is no remove or change button available. I put in the CD and there is no uninstall option on the CD's installation routine.
WTF? I am logged into XP as an administrator. Can anyone tell me how to make the remove button appear in control panel or where the hidden uninstall routine is? I have tried moving and renaming the Adobe program folders to trick the installer into thinking the program wasn't installed. No dice. Fork me! 2 months and it does it again. I am in a new dimension of pissed off.

Nope. In fact Illustrator and Photoshop don't install program groups. Just individual program icons on the start menu. Thanks for the try...

Click start button, click on control panel, 3rd from left at the top is "add/remove" . Hope that helps

For some reason your computer has lost the uninstall files, so Windows can't give you that option.
Try this, just plug the CD's back in and install. Then go to Add/Remove, and see if you can now uninstall. If so, uninstall. Reboot. Reinstall the programs. |

Every program must have at least "remove" under there. Check some of the other applications in Add/Remove programs to see if you have a change/remove button. I know you said you were logged in as administrator, but no buttons under add/remove usually means you have no local admin rights. |

The install programs won't run until the programs are uninstalled. The uninstall programs won't run until the programs are installed. It's a do loop! |

I thought so too, but apparently not. Norton Live update has remove,iTunes has nothing, Adobe has nothing, etc.... |

do this at your own risk!!!!!!!!
Delete the adobe folder under c:\program files Now go start, run, regedit click ONCE on my computer, then go to edit, find, adobe, enter delete all associated keys, after deleting key hit F3 and keep deleting associated keys until you get not found. Follow at your own risk, this is dangerous and could kill your Windows XP!!!!!!! WARNING!!!!! |

You say you are logged in as Administrator? I would verify this... sounds access level related. Make sure the logged in account has local admin access. Power users is not enough for Adobe products. |

+1, reboot and verify. My photoshop CS has remove/change beside it on the add/delete menu. If that doesn't work you'll just have to delete the photoshop folder from your c:/programs and chop out all the photoshop keys from the registry. That would be my approach anyway. |

I agree, I just don't know how to fix it. I am logged on to the only account on the PC it is the administrator account. I even made a new admininistrator account to see if the add/remove menu would change. It did not. |

Well, system restore didn't work. Logging on as an administrator in safe mode didn't work. Time to try KA38's manual removal instruction links.

since when. When I had photoshop it did find the folder it's installed in and see if there is an uninstall file there |

One thing you can try... if all else fails...
Google search for uninstall MSIEXEC /x Basically you go to this registry key... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Uninstall Search for your program by clicking on each guid till you find the correct one. Hopefully you'll see something like MsiExec.exe /X{C950420B-4182-49EA-850A-A6A2ABF06C6B} in the key. (This is just an example.. don't use that one!)  Go to the command prompt and type or paste in the same info... MsiExec.exe /X{C950420B-4182-49EA-850A-A6A2ABF06C6B} (hit enter) Hopefully this will uninstall the program. An easier way to find the proper guid (long #) is to google for the uninstall guid for the program via google or search on the programs site... |

Success! KA38's links did 99 percent of the job and after that I had to suck it up and proceed per thedave1164's advice (tempered by the KA38 links). After a bit of judicious registry hacking the software let me reinstall and all is running well. No loss of data or other XP functionality. Lots of big hugs and kisses from the little girl.

Pretty sure there isn't. We bought the box brand new just to run this software package. The first failure happened after about 2 months and now this time 2 months again. We run NAV, Spybot and Ad-Aware regularly. Never any hits except cookies. The machine sits behind a hardware firewall and runs a software firewall and I don't allow scripts to run. The daughter doesn't visit any porn or Warez type sites. The preview pane in her email is turned off and she is very good about not opening anything that she isn't expecting. She also doesn't install any software (Acrobat, Flash, etc.) without asking first. I will certainly agree that it is a strange failure mode. I've never seen (or heard) of anything like it. |

So you're running NAV and a software firewall but you have a hardware firewall as well? Ditch the software FW and find a less resource-intensive AV.
It sounds like something is corrupting some dlls. Have you tried repairing Windows? Is this a brand PC or a white box? How long have you had it? How overloaded is it program-wise? |
