Man arrested in 33-year-old shooting

A suspect is behind bars in Charlotte in connection with a New York police officer shooting 30 years ago.



Frank Robert Nelson is accused of shooting a New York State University police officer in 1971.



The U.S. Marshal investigating the case said Nelson was trespassing on property on Stoneybrook University when he was initially arrested. That’s when police said he shot the officer and ran.



The officer survived and is now retired.



Authorities won’t say what led them to Nelson after all these years but they found him just outside the Holy Islamville community just outside York, SC. Marshalls said he was known as Abdullah Ali in the Muslim community. Marshals then arrested him at his job at a construction site in Charlotte. Marshals said Nelson had a number of different IDs on him at the time of the arrest.



“He was very surprised that people were still out looking for him after all this time. Of course he was going under an assumed name but he did make one mistake after 34 years and that was the opportunity that we needed to capture him,” explained Steve Gladden, U.S. Marshall.



Marshals said they cannot reveal exactly what led them to Nelson. They said an arrest this long after a case is rare but not unheard of.



“We’re not going to disclose exactly what happened, but you can rest assured that eventually all fugitives make a mistake. After 34 years he made a mistake that led us directly to South Carolina, and then through surveillance we followed him into Charlotte one morning and arrested him as he went to work,” said Gladden



Nelson is now waiting in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Jail to be extradited to Suffolk County, New York
