OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha woman was convicted of assault on a police officer Wednesday after she admitted in court that she slapped a police officer.

Connie Norton, 47, is charged with assault on a police after she allegedly attacked an officer at Millard South High School last February. Officer Dawn Chizek said Norton refused to accept a parking ticket, then allegedly hit Chizek across the face and repeatedly kicked her.

The question for the jury was whether the slap was a felony. Norton's lawyers said Wednesday, "We all do stupid things, but does it rise to the level of a felony?"

Several students said they saw the whole thing.

"She started punching and kicking her and apparently started cussing at her because I could hear her at times," said Millard South student Ty Wagner.

Norton said she was afraid of Chizek because of a previous incident in which Chisek had arrested Norton's daughter for a hit-and-run accident. Norton said that when Chizek tried to pull her from her car, she refused.

Norton admitted, "I slapped her on the wrist. I slapped the officer three times. I hit her hard enough to cause her pain."

Prosecutor Sandy Denton told the jury, "People don't have the right to go nuts on a criminal level, and when it's done to a police officer, it's a felony."

Denton asked Norton whether she liked Chizek, and Norton replied, "No, I didn't like her at that time. I know I should not have hit her. But I don't want to take responsibility for things that are an exaggeration."

The jury returned a guilty verdict Wednesday afternoon. Norton could face up to five years in prison.

I'm pretty sure that pulling her from the car is in reference to her daughter's hit and run accident. Her daughter hit somebody and fled and the same officer stopped her and tried to remove her from the vehicle but she refused.

Were you sitting in the courtroom where she was found guilty of a felony charge? The question wasn't even if she beat on the officer, it was if it rose to the level of a felony. And it did.

No I wasn't but if you were please let us know if the cop tried to pull her out of the car because it doesn't really say definitively one way or the other and it seems like that would be a little weird...maybe uncalled for.

Sheesh - I swear women are loose cannons . . . .

ETA: If the women refused to "accept" the ticket - Then the officer probably said "could you please step out of the car" (as i probably would seeing that she might be doped up or something) Thats probably what started the whole thing . . .Who knows if the officer used excessive force or not -
I doubt that an officer would try to pull her out - especially without backup - Or maybe she tried to pull her out BECAUSE she was hitting her ? Dunno

Maybe 'the system' doesn't have provisions for that but spraying people or pulling them out of cars doesn't seem right to me over a parking ticket.

I would be more inclined to believe the version you just described.

Just makes me wonder where the 'pulling out of car' stuff came from. Maybe she's making shit up to make a berserk freak-out seem (somewhat) justified.

But if the pulling out of the car stuff was true no one would respond well to that. Flailing in self-defense is very foreseeable IF something like that occurred without reason.

I think felonies are thrown out to easily. Would this have been a felony if she had hit someone who wasn't a cop?
