Just saw this information scroll across the bottom of the screen on local news. This is all
I have seen. Will update if I find out more. UPDATE: It was some kind of radioactive measuring device and that it contains a small amount of radioactive material inside it that could cause sickness if an individual was exsposed to a for a period of time. No other news about it... This was stolen out of a storage shed...  LB |

We used to have radioactive sources on some of our old meters, they could definitely fuck you up if you kept it close to you. I heard of a guy who put one such sources in his back pocket and forgot about it. He lost his entire buttock and some bone.

This has happened more than once in my area. DOT uses some kind of radioactive device to measure pavement with. If you removed the radioactive element and shoved it up your nose it would simply make you a dumbass.
On another note, I was behind two semi's the other day that were carrying large containers from Oak Ridge TN labeled Radio Active Waste, Unstable, Class A they were about the size of septic tanks. No DOE chase vehicles, they were held on the flatbed with nylon straps. A terrorist with a pickup truck and a box cutter could have made off with one without a problem. |

If it was anything even remotely dangerous it would have escort. Probably just contaminated refuse, like gloves, booties, tools, things like that which can become contaminated but aren't at all dangerous. Or, it could have been an empty shipping container on its way to or returning from wherever. |

I believe you. When I was a kid, I got to take a tour of the (now defunct) N-reactor at Hanford (WA). When we were leaving, the tour guide showed us a machine that you put your hands and feet into so as to ensure you weren't "hot". He picked out a lady in the group to try the machine and after she had stepped in the device, he slyly placed a package of mantles into one of the footwells. Of course, the machine went semi-bonkers and I thought the lady was going to jump outta her shoes. After everybody's BP was back to normal, the guide held up the package of mantles. |

That is exactly what he stole. The radioactive material is called a "check source" allowing a function check by the user. ETA: Probably an IM-247. But several have sources. Not real bad, just a small gamma emitter. It will register about 100 counts per minute on contact, which is the limit for surface contamination. I really wouldn't worry about it. |

Could be anything. Paving contractors, soils testing labs and state DOT field technicians use density testing equipment that uses a radioactive source. The techs must be certified to transport, handle and use the equipment. There's not enough material in the thing to do any wide-spread damage, but it could make a few people quite sick, I would think.

Yea, try to buy them in bulk, maybe surplus. Get a few thousand. Put those little canisters in a big pile. Then put it in your trunk and drive across a border crossing. |

The Wireliners use various equipment that contains readioactive isotopes..... Every so often they get stolen, even rarer is when somone breaks it open to see the radioactive stuff, nothign like having to explain radaition burns at the local emergency ward

Nothing like a radiography source. Those things will give you a lethal dose in a few minutes. They use depleted uranium as a shield, if that gives you any clue as to how nasty they are. Good thing he didn't get ahold of one of those.
