New Paltz resident Ira Margolis voiced strong opposition to such weaponry, bringing with him a steel plate polka-dotted with holes he said were made by the AR-15.

"polka-dotted"?

far out!

Nolan said the AR-15 weapons are more accurate than the rifles currently used by police, and are therefore, safer.
They must have Mini-14s.

Geez, what a bunch of limp wristed liberal assholes.

I wonder if they'd be singing a different tune of some nut job killed someone in their family, I wonder if they would still prefer the police to "subdue" him rather than kill them?

Considering that AR-15s were banned in NY state (by names and features) in 2000, they should not have them.

Morons. Let the police carry what the can qualify with, be it an m1 garand or AKM.

Doesn't "accurate" and "safer" depend on whether or not they actually train and regularly shoot them?  Just putting one in the trunk of a car, well doesn't seem that safe to me.

UH?

No, not even close.

Some local municipalities put in bans and such that you would have to register them (i.e. Albany, NYC, Buffalo, etc), but that's it.

There's the state AWB which has been in effect since 94 or so as well.

Pre-bans are still perfectly legal there. I had a bunch when I lived there. (Moved out a couple months ago)

As soon as I get my stupid DL in this state and can buy AR's legally, I'll probably be selling my pre-bans back to NY...

NY State copied the federal AWB back in 2000 so unless owned prior to 9/14/94 all AR-15s were banned for ownership.

Colt quit making the  'AR-15' for civilians.

So unless you own a 'pre ban' gun with 'AR-15' stamped on the side, it cannot be owned in NY state. Only 'pre bans' are legal.

Just bought a Bushmaster, and I'm getting a SEBR soon as well.

No problems here. Just can't have bayo lug, etc.

But it is not an 'AR-15'.

The Colt AR-15 was banned by name in 2000 and now these cops claim they need 4 of them in 2005.

So the ban is not working.

Have you ever been to new paltz ? like its neighbor woodstock it is literally full of leftover hippies and new ones in training.  Artsy craftsy shops, galleries and a state funded liberal factory (SUNY New Paltz) nothing in the article surprises me

Then again, very little of our discussion here on www.ar15.com pertains to Colt made AR-15's prior to the Sporter name change.
I've never understood why the New York AW ban, which bans:
ANY  OF  THE  WEAPONS, OR FUNCTIONING FRAMES OR RECEIVERS OF SUCH
  49  WEAPONS, OR COPIES OR DUPLICATES OF SUCH WEAPONS , IN ANY CALIBER,  KNOWN
  50  AS:
  51    (I) NORINCO, MITCHELL, AND POLY TECHNOLOGIES AVTOMAT KALASHNIKOVS (ALL
  52  MODELS);
  53    (II) ACTION ARMS ISRAELI MILITARY INDUSTRIES UZI AND GALIL;
  54    (III) BERETTA AR70 (SC-70);
  55    (IV) COLT AR-15;
  56    (V) FABRIQUE NATIONAL FN/FAL, FN/LAR, AND FNC; .

...does not include all "copies or duplicates" of the AR-15 series of weapons. To be honest, NY government is only a court interpretation away from losing post ban AR's from what I can see as an average joe reading their law.

During the fed ban the BATFE took the interpretation as being an EXACT copy or duplicate

New Paltz is an ultra liberal college town.  This is the same place that the mayor (elected by hippie SUNY college students) made national headlines by performing gay marriages in violation of NYS law.  Until they stop letting the libs run the Village you can expect more of this type of crap.  It is too bad because New Paltz is located in a very scenic part of the Hudson Valley.

This is the kind of thing gun owners need to CHAMPION more. Gun controllers are not happy to regulate weapons for just the ordinary man. They are anti-COP-GUN too, meaning that they don't want weapons even in the hands of the police.

That is why cops ought to be on our side in this whole thing.

Liberalism is a disease of the mind that knows no boundaries. The stupid outlook on the world that libbies have infects everything they touch, and renders them unable to use even the slightest bit of common sense on any issue, ESPECIALLY when it comes to matters of life and death. They so demonize "assault weapons" in their kooky little brains that the weapons themselves BECOME evil rather than the person using them. And they become so silly that they can't even turn off stupid long enough to realize why police might need such weapons.

That is why libbies should be institutionalized, not elected.
