PD is good for domestics, idiots, and general mayhem.
County is good for DUIs, and bloodier traffic accidents. Pick your entertainment level, and remember they will assist each other so you will probably get to see a little of everything. Weekends are generaly the best. Better yet, research your local newspaper and see who seems to be the most active. In smaller towns it's usually the County. |

As far as PD vs SO, I'd go with where you're a resident. You'll learn things about your local community you never suspected, no matter how long you've lived there. |

Weekends are always more fun. At 0200 when the bars close you can always count on some fights and car crashes shortly after.

I would suggest a mid-shift for a weekday and a dog shift for a weekend. A day shift would be pretty boring (mainly traffic enforcement). As far as weekends go, definately a Friday or Saturday if you want action. Sundays are slow.

Avoid morning shifts. Go ride with the local guys who work the worst district on evening or graveyard shift on Fri. or Sat. Every cop I know says evening shift is better. Here that is 3-11p.m. The hood is a ghosttown from 7a.m. to 3p.m..

He asked me not to carry, but said the shotgun was mine if it got bad, told me what rounds he had in it. Left it unlocked for me.

Friday night on the second or fourth friday of the month. 2nd or 3rd watch. People get paid, go out and buy lots of alchohol or drugs and then do entertaining things for you while you watch from the car.
Went on a ridealong with my father years ago (I was 16 and considering the force once out of school) using the above fomula. Worked great. Got to see a bunch of strung out crackheads get pepper sprayed over the course of the night. |

I did a few years as a Reserve Officer with our city Police . I usually found that Friday and Saturdays were busy . 3 to 11 or dogshift . Not sure how your area works but we went through an academy and had full powers of arrest . We had to provide our own weapon though . More fun to participate than just ride along . |

Lets see Logan Heights after the checks come out or out by Jacumba and Jamacha? I think Logan Heights on payday would be wildest.
My son (home on leave when transferring to overseas in Korea) went out with his Uncle the LASO deputy in Altadena. They made a check on some cars in the mountains above Altadena and he got handed the AR and told. Safety off, no rounds in chamber . Few guys in the near brush and several others came up out of the brush behind the Uncle. Uncle Mark?" "I hear them, load and lock and cover, bring them up to where I can see them" Guess his uncle figured he knew what to do if he had too. SNICK , says he just had to wave his hand and they very calmy went where he gestured. |

Check your local LEO's and ride on the 1st or the 15th weekend. The sponges get their hand outs then and that can make for an interesting night on the shift you mentioned. If the 1st or 15th are not availible go for a full moon weekend. I know some say it makes no differance but when I was a LEO that was the nut night.

I have been with the sheriffs dept twice and I loved it. My friend went with the local PD and he said it was boring as shit because they made him go with a community relations officer.

Sorry to hijack but this sounds like something I'd love to do.
Do all PDs/SDs offer ride alongs? I live in a medium sized town with almost no violent crime but I imagine there would be much to see regardless. What is generally required of the person going on the ride along? |
