PS I know I'm in WAY over my head but I have to stumble along as best I can.  |

I plug it in and stand back. It does all that by itself.
This is a modified 2924-XL-EN and AFAIK its only 10/100. It doesnt have the Gigabit module. |

Soinds like a physical layer problem or something in startup-config got hosed.
Unplug everything and test... if that didn't work dump startup config. |

hhmmm well Subnetmask will probably come along and make me look like a complete moron, but I'll still take a stab at it.
From what your saying it boots up then it looks like it starts loading the startup-config file and then it freezes. I would try to boot up into RMON mode erase the startup-config and redo it. Hopefully you've got it backed up. If so I would double check the startup-config and make sure everything is good. (no typos) |

Is there a space between the "GigabitEthernet" and the "0/2"?

Its possible that it is giving errors because the startup config is trying to use commands on a user level, not on privledged/enable mode, possibly even config mode.
I could be wrong though. |

Go into Rmon and recover the config. Procedure varies by device, Cisco.com is your friend. Jeff

Could be someone loaded the wrong version of code on that switch, or the code may be corrupt.
Try getting the correct code, breaking into ROMMON and loading it. |

1. Attach to the console.
2. Unplug the power cable. 3. Hold down the mode button while plugging the switch back in. Release the mode button when the 1X LED goes out. 4. switch: flash_init 5. switch: load_helper 6. switch: rename flash:config.text flash:config.old 7. switch: boot 8. Enter 'n' at initial config dialog. 9. Switch>en 10. Switch#rename flash:config.old flash:config.text 11. Switch#copy flash:config.txt system:running-config (hopefully this works without locking the switch...) 12. Switch#sh run If that works, start removing lines that don't belong there.

Hmmm...it's starting to sound like the wrong startup-config ended up on that switch. Just rename config.text (to keep it handy, just in case) and start over. Do you actually NEED the old config for anything? |

It's old outdated hardware. Pitch the damn thing, get something newer.
When you get the newer hardware, don't let just any freaking moron touch the damn thing. Dust off and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.  Seriously, wipe it, clean, real clean. Then reboot.

Lets see.... Dear XXXXXX (Major player in Aerospace industry) I am pitching your outdated hardware even though you paid us MAJOR bucks to secure it to TEMPEST standards. Please buy something newer so once again you can pay out the ass to keep government secrets inside the damn box where they belong. Oh and when you get the new one DONT TOUCH IT YOU FREAKIN MORON! Actually I found out late today that a particular guy at the agency we sold this thing to isnt happy unless he's constantly tweaking and upgrading these things. He has sent them back all horked up before. So I will be taking the Seriously, wipe it, clean, real clean advice. Hang around guys I'll need you tomorrow! (I'm going to have to buy some beer on this deal  )

Nothing wrong with the switch.
It just happens that there was a gig module in the switch before hand, and its configuration is still there. Clear the config and start again, problem will be solved. |
