Wish I knew why they don't call it a county. Maybe it has to do with the Catholic heritage of Louisiana.
+1 to the LA equivalent of county=parish. |

Louisiana's civil code is based on Napoleanic Law because of it's French heritage. Basically in a nutshell a parish is a county. Maybe Eric the Hun can chime in since he went to LSU.

It WAS above sea level some 280 years ago. But development of the Mississippi and reinforcement of the levees prevented annual flooding which would deposit a fine layer of silt, offsetting the subsidence common to a littoral delta. New Orleans has been sinking with nothing to offset the subsidence. Similar process happens in Houston but this is from groundwater withdrawl. The clay aquifers recharge very slowly, sometimes not at all. The removal of the trapped groundwater causes the ground to settle. The Brownwood subdivision had to be abandoned due to subsidence. It is now a swamp, complete with half-submerged houses and flooded streets, all overgrown. |
