Tell us what you think could be considered the greatest song of all time.
I met a guy once who swore "Blinded by the Light" was the best song ever. I like the song, but his enthusiasm for it was a little strange.
As for me, I can't pick just one. I like them all for different reasons. |

"Don't you forget about me"-Simple Minds
"True Faith"-New Order "Relax"-Frankie Goes to Hollywood Anything by DuranDuran Anything by Simon and Garfunkel ETA: 1st Impression-Emerson, Lake and Palmer 3rd Impression-ELP |
well not the greatest, but a song about the greatest link for some of song
Amazing Grace.
Taps. Not sure if taps could be concidered a song, and I'm not sure if either of them would be concidered "greatest", but it's hard to find any other songs that can express so much emotion. There are a wealth of other songs that are great, but for me a "greatest" song has to be able to drive every emotion you have, and those two do it. |

I've always been a big fan of Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas.
why? do you not like music? |
Me too. But I think 'Amazing Grace' is the Greatest Song of all time. 'Love Song' by Tesla is pretty cool, too. |
You Never Even Called Me By My Name Also known as "The Perfect Country and Western Song" by David Allen Coe.
I hate that fucking song, with the burning passion of a thousand suns. Anyway.. carry on |

[Kip Dynamite] Like anyone could even know that Napoleon. [Kip Dynamite]

I just stomached my way through Bruce Springstien's version Manferd Mann's much better but still not worthy of greatest song of all time. I think songs are so personal, it depends on a lot of what personally is happened to you at the time the song was popular [or released]. For me: Foriegner: Head Games [I loved that song back when it was popular - I was in HS had a nice group of friends who I partied with, good times!] Bryan Adams: Summer of 69 - again good times. Spent the summer this song was released up in Everett Washington as a life gaurd. Had a lot of fun times back then! I saw Adam's in concert down in Tacoma on my birthday. Just about any song off of the SPORT album by Heuy Lewis and the news. These are just good shooting the breeze songs! I loved Greg Kihn My loves in Jeopardy. Pat Benatar's Hit me with your best shot. Can't say I have a favorite though. Patty |

I can't make it through either one without my eyes leaking. |

My 'greatest' song is dependant on my mood at the time the question is asked. For right now:
Gentle on My Mind By Campbell Glen It's knowing that your door is always open And your path is free to walk That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag Rolled up and stashed behind your couch And it's knowing I'm not shackled By forgotten words and bonds And the ink stains that have dried upon some line That keeps you in the backroads By the rivers of my mem'ry That keeps you ever gentle on my mind It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy Planted on their columns now that binds me Or something that somebody said Because they thought we fit together walking It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find That you are moving on the backroads By the rivers of my mem'ry And for hours you're just gentle on my mind Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines And the junkyards and the highways come between us And some other woman crying to her mother 'Cause she turned and I was gone I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind I dip my cup of soup back from the gurglin' Cracklin' caldron in some train yard My beard a roughning coal pile and A dirty hat pulled low across my face Through cupped hands 'round a tin can I pretend I hold you to my breast and find That you're waving from the backroads By the rivers of my mem'ry Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind |

Yep, it is personal. The song that gets me fired up is that original rendition of Mary Had a Little Lamb. Poor girl must have been heart-broken. I guess a baby goat might have been worse.
Unless it's "Silent Night" during Christmas Eve service at church,
"Old Shep" by Hank Snow. Both make me tear up. |
"A Country Boy Can Survive" - Hank Williams, Jr.
Followed by the Dukes of Hazzard theme song "Good Ol' Boys" by Waylon Jennings of course |
That is a damn fine song |
Since is has no words, I'm not sure that it counds as a song. But 'Fanfare for the Common Man' by Aaron Copelandmight well be the greatest piece of music under four minutes ever composed.
+1, followed by Hotel California by Eagles |
Paint it black by the stones.
But with a more recent bias i would say "Evil" by interpol |
Walk Away Renee by The Left Banke...an amazing song, especially if you consider a 17 year old wrote it...
You mean Karn Evil 9 from Brain Salad Surgery? Great band! |
Man....giving this more thought..I would say:
The 17 minute long version (cover) of The Turtles "Dont let me be misunderstood" peformed by Santa Esmerelda or The 12 minute long version of "Cold Sweat" by James Brown. |
Right now I have Decre...ded that There's No Home for You Here (The White Stripes) is the best.
I week ago it was Death letter (The White Stripes live and James Blood Ulmer versions). A week before that it was Dead leaves and the Dirty Ground live (The White Stripes). Before that it was Apple Blossom (The White Stripes) Before that it was Leaving Hope (NIN). Before that Part four of the New World Symphony(Devorak) . Before that Maybe I'm Amazed (Paul McArtny) Before that Hey Jude (The Beatles) Before that Drive My Car (The Beatles) To be entirely honest I can't choose one, to I have to split it up in to time periods Now - Three months ago The White Stripes Three months ago - Six months ago NIN Six months ago- 12 months ago Captian Beefheart and Sun Ra 1 Year ago - 2 Years ago Keith Jarrett 2 Years ago - 3 Years ago Jazz and The Beatles Thats as far as I remember. |
I'd have to go with:
Simple Man- Lynyrd Skynyrd Little Wing- Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn (Both versions are good) |
Big Rock Candy Mountain....a man I have great reverence for turned me onto it.....
A song that mentions cigarette trees is always a fine choice. |
You bet! Brain Salad Surgery is my alltime favorite album. Keith Emerson was genius in creating it. HH |
