I am looking for a long range rifle that is very accurate.
I was thinking of .308 or .270. I am open to suggestions. And no I'm not getting a BMG.

Define "very". This is highly bank account balance dependent.
If you want a production bolt gun the Accuracy International and Sako TRG are good choices that will set you back a few grand. The Savage 10FP is well thought of if you want to spend reasonable amounts. |

That's 1.5 MOA, and that's not hard to get. The Savage or Remington PSS should do better than that. Some of the .308 AR-10s should be able to as well with the right ammo. |

My Remington VS with IOR scope 2lb trigger and FGGM 168gr will do .25 to .50 if I do my part.

I can honestly say I have not shot a rifle at a target under 200 yards in so long I can't remember. My course of fire is 200,300 and 600 yards. My match rifle is a POS and will ONLY hold 1.5" at 200. I'm looking at tinkering with 1000 yards. |

Lazzonia. .338 Lapua .300 Remington Ultra Mag any of the new .300 short mags....... others The reason? That .308 is about a 800 yard rifle. If I've got an AR-15, you aren't that safe at 800 yards. If I"ve got an AK, you aren't safe at 800 yards. Both can lay down more firepower than you, and get reasonable hitting capability, ballistically and accuracywise, at 800 yards. They aren't ideal, but they can put rounds in your vicinity If you want a long range rifle, you want to be outside the range of a standard, intermediate cartridge. |

Best rifle for the job without spending over $2K is a Remington 700 PSS. I have one in 300 Winchester Magnum that will shoot (with my son on the trigger with his young eyes) .50" @ 100 meters all day long. We shoot 1 gallon milk jugs filled with colored water @ 1000 meters! Great fun. I really love living in the desert with unlimited ranges to shoot long distances!
You should be able to get one with the Leupold Mk. 4 scope set up , out the door for $1800 or so. $1K of that price will be optics. A long range rifle is usless without first rate optics. (Would you run cheap Arco unleaded in a Ferrari?) |

Interesting. I own 1 scope. It's sort of a POS and all I use it for is load development. ALL of my shooting is done with irons. With a PSS I'd put a set of micrometer irons on it. But that's just me. |

Remington PSS or LTR in .308
...many mounting options they come with a nice stock decent barrel once broken in at least .75" out of the box ...and the choice of JBT nationwide. Need I say more? A decent scope is worth the $.Can't go wrong with a nice Leupold. I recommend a nice used Leupold. The perfect combo would be the LTR with a 3.5x10x40 Leupold M3 with Badger base and rings. This will get you to 800 yards or so with federal GM 175 ammo. With a .308, you really need a 22" or longer barrel to shoot at 1000 yards. The PSS can be had for less $ and has a full length 26" barrel. |

Any accomplished shooter can do that with many 20" bbl. AR's--with iron sights. What is your definition of "long range" then?  You really need to read some books--or at least magazine articles--in order to be able to ask reasonable questions. No flame intended--just the facts.

What is your definition of long range? As a highpower shooter, my definition is 600-1,000 yards, and I only use iron sights right now.

Any Remington, Winchester or Savage you buy at Wal-Mart can probably do 1.5 MOA with good ammo.
In my experience, the WSMs seem to be particularly accurate factory rifles. |

Tikka T-3 in .308 - get the Varmint with 22" barrel, stainless is nice too. Under $700, guaranteed 1MOA out of the box, sweetest trigger in the world out of the box. I got 3/8" groups at 100 yards with milsurp FMJ ammo. Bolt throw is like a hot knife through butter.

That's 15 inches at 1000 yards in a perfect world. You need to set your sights higher (how's that for a pun!) and seek a rifle that will deliver between 0.5 and 0.75 moa, for starters. Caliber is a little dependent on the application, so I would be looking for a cartridge that has very high BC bullets available. You are planning on handloading for this rifle, correct? |

An SF friend of mine at Ft. Campbell KY has an AI 338 Lapua Mag single shot rifle. We stretched it out to 1400m once and was ringing steel with it pretty regularly.
I helped with the development of the Barrett 338 LM semi auto. We shot it out to 1200 and 1300m. It would hit 7 and 8" groups at those ranges. I was using my own 250g Lapua LockBase reloads to do it. Look at the 338 Lapua Mag. |

Check out the Savage LE Models for a good starting point. The .308 for a short action, the .270 takes the long action. , and as long as you go for the long action might as well go .300 Win Mag.
The Savages are the best bang for your buck. |

I'd just like to recommend that he do some long range practice.
Having an accurate rifle is one thing. Shooting accurately at long range, like 1000yds, is another. For the rifle, I think something in a 300 magnum is easily affordable, can have good accuracy, will reach 1000 yds with no problem, and there is good factory match ammo for it. I'd choose a Remington, but I know alot of people that use a Savage, but they have to replace the crappy Savage stock that comes with it. Then, I'd say study the trajectories of the load to be used, calculate your come-ups, and go out and sling some lead. You'll be amazed at how much deflection that a little bit of wind will create at long distances like that. It's a challenge. |

Have you considered a rifle chambered in some type of 7mm cartridge? My father just gave me a custom 7mm Mag for Christmas and I love it. He used to buy all kinds of crazy rifles, from beautiful .270's all the way up to a huge .458 Express. A few years ago he bought a Magnum Research 7mm Mag and loved it from the start. He sold most of his crazy rifles because they just weren't fun to shoot. I don't think he ever shot the .458 and he only shot the .300 Weatherby Magnum a handful of times. The 7mm Mag will kill pretty much everything in North America and is much easier to shoot than the .30's. Its worth looking into, you never know what you'll find when trying new guns

Ok guys my brother [speedboy] started this thread for me because I am looking for a inexpensive yet quite acrit rifle
Heavy but not sniper rifle heavy and living in Michigan 300 yards for a deer hunting rifle is unheard of so that constitutes longrange for us $700 is the roof in the way of cost for justh the rifle and the reason is after that it is hard to justify it with the parents. I want it acrit in order to be sure that when I miss I am at fault not my rifle Thanks for the reasponse Arnutt...........Speedboy's 17yrold bro.................... |

Arnutt, I'm just going to assume that Speedboy is your youger brother, so if you're 17yo. I think it's cool that you're both investigating this. It's always best to see what's out there and real world feedback from people who actually own what you want to buy. When I was 17, it would have been almost impossible to convince my parents to let me spend 700 bucks on just a rifle ( all the accessories can double that - easily). If the farthest you think you may shoot is 300 yards, there are plenty of less expensive rifles out there that will give you that kind of accuracy for almost half of what your budget is. Sure, it's real easy for some guys on this site to recommend specialty rifles, but these same guys may not have considered the fact that the average teenager makes less than 12k a year. After all, at 17 you should still be in high school and probably working a part time job. Hell I used a Savage as the platform for two of my "Tactical" rifles because I have a family and a mortgage. I have my priorities aligned with my income, and a 3k target rifle just doesn't fit in there. I don't know much about bolt actions, but I've read elsewhere that Howa makes a damn decent rifle for a very reasonable price. Don't be a brand snob. It may not say Remington on it, but you'll still have a lot of fun with it. You're only 17, there's always time to earn more money and buy better toys. |

What he said. There are lots of reasonably priced weapons that will do an adequate job at 300 yards. What you need right now is a good utility weapon that will allow you to get enough practice that it won't be your fault, either. The difference in price between one gun and another can buy you a lot of ammo for practice. Besides, you don't want to be worrying about beating up a multi-thousand dollar rifle in the woods right now, anyway. You will find that worrying about the thing getting dinged up (because you spent every last dime you had on it) can take the fun out of a day in the woods. You can always move up later and get yourself a gold-engraved custom Weatherby or something, but for right now, get something adequate but not too expensive and have some fun. Even if you get the more expensive gun later, you will probably retain a fondness for your first weapon. |

Walk into any Walmart and for 462 bucks get a Savage 10fp in .308.
 The Savage is one of the most accurate rifles out of the box and .308 is a very accurate and flexible cartridge.Add a Super Sniper scope and you have a very capable system on the cheap that can run with the big dogs.As your skills improve you can have the action blueprinted,add a Mcmillan stock(though the Mcmillan stock is available as an option from the factory),etc.All the upgrades to squeeze the last bit of accuracy out of the gun.Sharp Shooter Supply is a great source to help you with the Savage.This is a pic of a Savage theyv'e tricked out
