AB 996 - REMOVAL OF HANDGUN AMMUNITION FROM STORE SHELVES

Authored by Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas, D - Los Angeles, AB 996 would require stores that sell handgun ammunition to keep it in a secure location not accessible to the store`s customers. In order to purchase handgun ammunition, a customer would have to find a store sales person and ask them to get it for them. This would do away with comparison shopping for ammunition by brand, loading or price, and would increase operating costs for retailers. In turn, this would likely be reflected in higher ammunition prices.

AB 996 is now on the GOVERNOR'S DESK! CRPA members should immediately contact the Governor`s office to ask for a veto of this blatant anti-business, anti-consumer legislation. He can be contacted as follows:

Address: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, California 95814
Telephone: General number, (916) 445-2841
Office of Legislative Affairs, (916) 445-4341
Fax: (916) 445-4633
No e-mail is available that would be effective in reaching the Governor.

Although the Governor has until October 9th to sign or veto AB 996, he could act at any time. Thus, IMMEDIATE ACTION is needed if CRPA`s members voices are to be heard!!!

AB 352 (Koretz), semiautomatic "microstamping" of cartridge case at the time of discharge with the pistols make, model, and serial number, so that the registered owner can be traced and possibly charged with a crime, has been tabled for the remainder of this year due to strong and severe opposition from CRPA, it`s members and others. Accordingly, it is not necessary to mention AB 352 to the Governor at this time. The same is true for SB 357 (Dunn) bullet serialization. However, both bills are eligible to be reactivated in January when the Legislature returns from it`s Fall recess.
