I have five turk mauser rifles and only one of them has a good bore. So I've been thinking about re-barreling four of them to something other than 8mm mauser or .308 win. (I already have bolt-actions in each). I've got two GEW98 turk re-works and two "K Kale's"(large ring but has a barrel shank threaded to the "small ring standard".

I'll be useing them for target shooting and maybe some whitetail deer hunting.

So what other "off the shelf" calibers should I look at?

Wouldn't a .22-250 require welding up the bolt face?

.25-06 is a good choice.

I also have a Turk Mauser I was oging to redo so I am interested in calibers as well. I was actually thinking along the lines of 30-06 myself, but always interested in if I cna make it a bigger thumber (I love 375 H&H as a caliber, woudl the action hold up to that?)

Yup, But there is a lot of opening up the action to make the .375 H&H fit. A better route to go is the .35-300 Win mag. Or a .35 Whelen.

ETA... A .458 win mag will would be close!

I already have a .35 whelen.

How does the action have to be opened up, I am not sure how strong a turk action is to begin with. I am not certian but I think they took German actions and polished the steel down so they coudl put their markings on it.

I would rather stay away from wildcat cartridges, 25-06 maybe, but what would I use the damn thing for?   I won't hunt with less than a 30 cal, and I use leverguns almost entirely for hunting with a Garand for nice longer shots

i think sarco still has new small ring swede 1896 barrels for around $80. these are great barrels and the 6.5x55 is a great rifle round. you might just find that they shoot well with handloads as they are now.

The mag has to be opened up (lengthened). Feedramp shortened. And the action needs to be Rockwell checked. Not a job for the at home dyi guy.

243 Winchester
260 Remington
7mm-08
308 Winchester Ackley Improved
338-308 Winchester Ackley Improved

All should feed through the magazine

Cautious guy that I am, I’d probably avoid some of the hotter commercial rounds in these old actions (though admittedly a military 8X57 round is pretty hot itself).

Being also a bit lazy, I’d avoid anything that required much action work.

Thus, my choices would be either 6.5X55 or 7X57.  I’d think either would be a real easy conversion.

That said, something like a .260 Remington or a 7MM-08 would be also tempting (and I’d think wouldn’t require much beyond maybe blocking off the mag well).

Anything bigger than 7.92x57JS (aka 8 Mauser) is not a good idea with a turk gun...

K98K, VZ24 or a Yugo... maybe...

But the Turk guns are mainly earlier production, and 8mm is enough of a bear for 'em as it is...

I think I will do the 375 if the reciever shows as ahrd enough....

I cannot get a barrel out of the US so I will ahve to have one made anyways.  Might as well ahve them do the action work and fill in the stupid turk markings

NO! 22-250 has the same .473 inch head size as 30-06

Consider 257 Roberts or 7mm Mauser
