Nine dead after Asian tropical storm

TOKYO (AP) - A powerful tropical storm churned over the sea between Japan and the Korean peninsula Wednesday, leaving a string of landslides and ravaged towns in southern Japan its wake. At least nine people were killed, and 16 people were missing, including two in neighboring South Korea.

Typhoon Nabi hit Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu on Tuesday, flooding seaside towns and driving more than 300,000 people from their homes. Tokyo dispatched some 1,500 soldiers to fortify coastal defenses and help in the rescue effort.

On Wednesday, Nabi lost strength as it roiled over the Sea of Japan and was downgraded to a tropical storm overnight. But it still had winds up to 67 mph as it traveled along Japan's northwest coast toward the northern island of Hokkaido, the country's Meteorological Agency said.

The storm killed at least seven people in Japan and injured 91, and at least 14 were missing, a National Police Agency official said on condition of anonymity, citing agency rules.

Kyodo News Agency reported its own toll of 14 missing and nine dead, including two women whose bodies were recovered early Wednesday after a landslide destroyed their homes.

Also among the dead were three killed when landslides swept through their homes in Kagoshima, according to Hideaki Torigoe, a police official. A 72-year-old man drowned on the island of Shikoku after being blown into a rain-swollen ditch.

Three were missing in a road collapse in Yamaguchi prefecture early Wednesday, crushing nearby houses, prefectural official Yoshimasa Mima said.

Nabi also caused damage in Korea, dumping up to 13 inches of rain in southern and eastern parts of South Korea from Monday through Wednesday morning.

One person was swept away in a swollen stream in Ulsan, about 250 miles southeast of Seoul, on Tuesday. Another person was missing after his car fell off a rain-slick road.

In the southeastern port city of Pohang, a Vietnamese cargo ship ran aground after high waves swept it toward the beach, said South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Tuesday. Its 22 crew members were safe, Yonhap said.

Last year, a record 10 typhoons and tropical storms struck Japan, leaving nearly 220 people dead or missing - the largest casualty toll since 1983. South Korea is typically hit by one or two storms a year.
