just interested in seeing how many people  here want to see the US gov't step in and dictate what  gas and oil prices should be.

Not I.

Break up monopolies and collusion is as far as I will tolerate government interference.

Atlanta is going to run out of gas thanks the the formerly Republican, now Communist, governor of Georgia.

My guess is more than one might expect on a predominantly "conservative" forum.

Tagged, anyway.

If anything the gov't should deregulate fuel production and get rid of taxes on gasoline.

If they do that, we will have gasoline shortages.

If the US would upgrade the refining in country, we wouldn't be so dependant on foreign supplies.

Aaak no!  You know darn well that this is the order of things:

Gas price is $3.50/gallon including $0.50/gallon tax (example)

Government eliminates $0.50/gallon tax completely to ease burden on citizens.

Less than 1/1000th of a second later, every single gas suppier bumps gas price by $0.50/gallon because consumers were already paying that much, and whatever they were willing to pay yesterday they will pay today (corporate logic).

Two weeks (months, whatever) later, Government can't fulfill its duties without the tax.  So government replaces the $0.50/gallon tax and gas is--you guessed it, $4.00/gallon.

Corporations will swoop in and suck any "relief" away from the consumers as increased profit.

Nope! One company sees the benefit in offering the same gas for 50 cents cheaper than everybody else. Everybody buys their gas. Other companies are forced to follow suit.

Ain't the free market great?

It's government interference that brought this situation about.  A bunch of phony mpoliticians catered to a bunch of stupid hippies over the years, so now we haven't the refining capacity.  One can't predict the specifics of storms, but one can be certain they will come.  Build more refineries, both to deal with the normally rising demand, and to spread the physical risk.  But, noooooo, a bunch of hippies runs around with signs, and the politicians cater to them and crow how they are pro environment.  Unless they can wave a magic wand so we can all levitate and fly, STFU!

No.  If we let them control one thing related to the economy like that, they will simply find another excuse to try to control another.  We've seen this in the past.

It isn't happening now, what magical force do you think will make it happen then?

It's rare that any gas station is more than a few cents one way or the other of any other local gas station.  The prices almost never migrate down, they migrate up.  If they cared about having the lowest prices, you'd see ads about how one station/company has a lower price...

NEVER. Except in true national emergencies.. WWII was last such as far as i am concerned.

DEAR GOD NO!!!

In some providences China has price control.
They have shortages that make what we're gonna have pale by comparison.

Oil is a WORLD MARKET COMMODITY. If region A sets price controls, the corporations will sell to region B,C,D etc etc ad nausea.....

Price controls are the surest way to bring about shortages.

That said, I *would* like to see government tax incentives for more fuel efficient vehicles, more government spending on developing our own resources (Be they renewbale or non renewable) so we can tell OPEC to kiss our white (Or black, tan, green or whatever other color of ass we have in America) ass and sell cheap fuel to American's.

Absolutely.  Are you familiar with the concept of a breakdown of competition?

The system doesn't work well, it just works better than the other options most of the time.

Yeah, I don't want them to "regulate"... however I wouldn't OBJECT to them building a damn REFINERY!!! (Or 3). IMO, THAT and letting the suppliers of oil "get away with" the prices THEY are currently receiving, (Need to put pressure on them by threatening LARGE quantities of $$ going to developing "alternative sources" if they don't LOWER prices FAST) are the 2 biggest problems right now.

Since we as taxpayers already subsidize the living hell out of the oil industry, it would be nice of them to not skullfuck us at every opportunity.

Refined unleaded gas is selling for $2.29 right now on the commodity markets.

Add in the Fed and State tax... $2.80
Add in shipping .... ... ... ... ...   $2.90

Normal profit is about .02 on gas. They sell it to get you to buy other shit.

Add in profit margin... ... ... ...  $2.95

Give it +/- .02 for shipping distance var

Gas should cost about...     $2.89 - $3.01
------------------------------------------

I bought 12 gal. today @ $2.79
