More or less. The direction in which the arrow is facing indicates which platoon the tank belongs to.
eg forward = 1st platoon. NTM |

We had them on our Braldeys in 1985 to be used as a tactical unit identifier also.
My Bradley had a "O" painted on the side and three ( III ) painted on the turret. I would say they are for both Friendly ID and Unit ID This is my Bradley in 1985 ( C-3-1, C-1/5 Cav)
