I've done a couple of google searchs now and come up with bupkis.  But I figure someone here likely knows the answer:

What are the "V" shaped markings on the skirt and turret of the M1 Abrams for?

More or less. The direction in which the arrow is facing indicates which platoon the tank belongs to.

eg forward = 1st platoon.

Thank you!  That's been bugging me for a while now.

We had them on our Braldeys in 1985 to be used as a tactical unit identifier also.
My Bradley had a "O" painted on the side and three ( III ) painted on the turret.

I would say they are for both Friendly ID and Unit ID
This is my Bradley in 1985 ( C-3-1, C-1/5 Cav)
