How true to history was the movie Dr. Zhivago?

So the wife got a hold of a copy of this and asked me to watch It with her. I was a little reluctant to sit down and watch a 4 year old chick flick, but I found the depiction of the Russian revolution and the implementation of communism terrifying and my interest was peaked.   Other than some shows on the history channel and that series land of the Tsars, I really know nothing of Russian history.

I see the peasants thinking they were going to have a life with “no more Tsars and no more masters” while what little freedom they had was stripped away.  I also see the taking of private property with the insinuation that you would not be around for long to fight it if you did.    Starvation, cattle cars and conscription also made me cringe.

I wonder how “realistic” the ideology portrayed in the film really was?
