Today I saw somebody actually standing by the road watching a tow truck change a flat tire. It looks like he had a full size spare right there. WTF? Who can't change a tire? I'm sure you guys have pet peeves when you find out somebody doesn't know how to do something you consider normal.
So, I want to make a list. A list of everything any able bodied adult should be able to do. Have at it! Rule: Only 1 item per person! 1.) Change a tire. OK! I trimmed some that were dupes, silly, or dumb, but I tried to keep as much as possible! I credited the first person to post with the idea, so if you're not on the list, you should have read the post first. I can/have done it on a dirt bike but I'm ashamed to say I can't really do it in a car. I did it in my dad's truck once though. I have been meaning to learn to though. I will add: Run a mile in under 10 minutes. I'm sure some of you here will disagree with me, but come on, it's 10 minutes. |

Robert A. Heinlein: The Man Who Knew How
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. --Lazarus Long |

Yes? I was framing up a garage a while ago with a few guys and this one dude just couldn't figure out what a measurement was unless it was printed on the friggin' tape. We made a lot of double cuts that day. |

You would be amazed how many cannot. |

Kill their own food...
And wash it down with beer they made themselves... |
|
Navigate from point A to point B using a compas AND perform simple triangulations with said compas and a map.
|
|
Do basic repair/maintenance to a vehicle.
So far, of the skills listed I am good to go except for one skill. I'm too ashamed to say which, but hope to remedy my deficiency soon. DanM |

YOU CAN'T DRIVE A STICK!!!! |

Provide food and shelter for themselves and offspring. There should be no need to mooch off the working to provide what you should should be able to provide for yourself.

My vote for the best so far is 1Andy2. It is amazing how those of us that can read take it for granted, and forget that there are still adults that can't read, any language. With the ability to read, most of the other skills can be learned, maybe not learned well, but learned. Good thread idea Jon3. I'm gonna enjoy this one. DanM |

NO......JOKE..... Hell, I've noticed lately when I say please and thank you to people that they're almost taken aback. These days, if you give a sincere thanks to someone most of the time they'll be genuinely pleased. |

Ever try to build something? |
||
|
So far I can do everything listed (Except the Trig, I never have needed to use Trig or I would know it, and I build stuff for a living)
I think everyone should know how to survive in their local environment with minimal tools.... It always amazes me how many people from the City go hiking and get lost. Then get themselves found three to five days later almost dead. There was a hunter that got lost for a month last year, when they foundhim he was in better shape than when he started out. |

Quoted: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quoted: Do basic algebra and trigenometry. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- why -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ever try to build something? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- did it for 13 years and never needed anything more than basic math, add ,subtract multiply, and divide. but then I was building houses not jet aircraft my vote is to drive according to the law. |

I bet you folks that "build" things do use trig, and maybe not
even know it... How do you make sure something is square - measure distance between the two diagonal corners - if they are the same you have a square. 90 degree angles, 45 degree angles, pitch and run on a roof. It is all trig, it is all good. DanM |
|
I'm not, there's just too many. It's one thign though to read a measure correct, it's another to apply it to what you are doing. |
