A few weeks ago I started a topic about firing my doctor because he wouldn't write me a prescription for vicodin that my previous doctor had been writing for me. [for years, about 50 a year]

Anyway, now I have another reason to fire his ass.....$127 for a damn office visit!! He spent maybe 15 minutes with me, didn't do a damn thing but talk and charges me $127 for it.

What do you guys pay? Remember this is only a general practioner.

GP...........$85.00

Cardiologist......$45.00

I swear this is true......unbelievable but true.

Both of these prices reflect a cash discount. I think the discount is about 35%.

I not even going to get into the difference in these two doctors, my GP is a great doctor.......but my heart doctor is AWESOME.....smartest sob I have ever met.

I got insurance too. It doesn't cover much of this office visit charge tho.

But a better question is...what does your doctor charge for a visit, not what you pay.

Got a great solution for you.  Just dont bother going.  But you have no problems paying $25 for a oil change or $150 for maintance on you car.

ETA: It all depends on your insurance. If he is an out of network doctor, you will pay full fare.  Thats how it goes.  But again just do everyone a favor and just dont bother with the doctors.

That seems awefully steep.  A straight 15 minute follow-up visit is a 99213 office code.  I don't know exactly how much that translates into but let's say about $45.

Now if you discussed an entirely new problem then it would be a different billing code and would be higher.

Are you paying cash or is that what he billed your insurance?  Anyone who comes to my office and pays with cash or a credit card I usually knock 30-50% off the bill.  I would rather have $45 now then the empty promise of $90 in six months.

I brought a pet to the vet last week for what looked like an infection in her toe.  We spent at the most 15 min. there and he Rx'd some antibiotics:  $56.  Hey, that's what it costs.

Don't make me tell you some of my VA stories or my experiences with the Canadian healthcare system.

There is no such thing as 'free' healthcare.  Someone is paying for it.  If you're on Medicaid then the U.S. taxpayer is paying for it.  If you have insurance through your employer then your employer is paying for it, or rather you are receiving it as part of your benefits package.

I wouldn't write you a script for Vicodin just because "your other doctor was doing it for you."
(Man, if I had a buck for every time I heard that line!)
Usually we get a guy asking for "only" a few dozen vicoden tabs that will last him a year only to find out that he "only" gets a few dozen tabs from about 30 other docs.
Most docs are leery about prescribing narcotics, especially for new patients that arrive with a brand name in mind....especially if that brand name is one of the most abused RX drugs in the nation. "Hey, Doc...I can't take that there methadone...It makes my throat swell up... I need me some Vicoden or Lortab or summofthat there Oxy IR!"
See it from his side, the war on some drugs is making all doctors a bit concerned over govermental "help" with our practices.
No MD wants a visit from our jack-booted friends at the DEA.

but as for your question without insurance, my GP has a
sign in the office that says if you have no insurance or have
been in an accident ...you have to prepay $47.

I think they charge my insurance more though..somewhere
around 60 bucks I think.

And he will write me about anything I need, he knows I hate

right away...damn I wish she had gone to med school as I wanted.

operatorerror,

Maybe you're having a difficult time understanding my post.  Let me explain it more clearly.  Someone is paying for it.  If he was/is in the military then he receives healthcare as a benefit.  And, yes, taxpayers are paying for that benefit.  In return, he will/has defended this country.

Having worked at a VA for 5 years taking care of this countries veterans I am well aware that they get healthcare as a benefit paid for by the taxpayer.

Are we clear now?

$15 co pay.

Your new doc probably pegged you as a drug seeker the second you asked for a pain medication by name.  If you have chronic pain, describe it to him and let him treat it his own way.  When a person asks for a pain medication by name, or tells you the dose they need, it usually raises a physician's eyebrows.  JMHO, but there are people who jump from doctor to doctor "needing" pain meds to feed a habit.

And no I'm not suggesting you have a habit.

The situation was this....my other doctor quit....left the building....I called and they were more than happy to assign me to another doctor that worked there.....he even knew my previous doc.....all my medical records were there so it was a convenient deal for me. I don't hop from doctor to doctor...never did. Before I moved to Washington I had my Nevada doctor for 19 years....from 1978 to 1997...and he never wrote a pain prescription until after my stroke in 1993 and then it was for terrific headaches. I specifically went in to meet this new doctor and get my prescriptions filled for blood pressure and gout meds....but he refused my vicodin scrip. I know what works for me, he can only guess.  And I don't think 50 tablets a year of generic vicodin is abusing.

$127 for a damn office visit!! He spent maybe 15 minutes with me, didn't do a damn thing but talk and charges me $127 for it.

$127 for 15(!) minutes is cheap considering the large amount of time you spent with him!  I pay $125+ per visit so my wife can spend 30 seconds or so with the doctor.  The doctor doesn't even stay long enough to sit down.  He averages billing 11 patients per hour(some he doesn't actually see) the 3.5 days per week he works.  That works-out, assuming he doesn't charge extra for anything, to $1,375 per hour!  I know the numbers since my employer does their billing and collections.

It's strange how the original poster asked how much your doctor charges for an office visit and so many people post other numbers entirely.  How much is the actual office visit?  $65, $100, $125, $150, higher?z

You think that $127 is bad?  My wife saw an ENT guy earlier this year.  $325 for an office visit.  And she was in the office for 20 minutes.  He glanced at a CAT scan, looked up her nose, wrote some things down, and left.  Cost me $28 ($15 copay + $13).

A standard office visit which is a level 3 visit is about $100. There is regional variation and you pay slightly more for a specialist. Any procedures go for far, far more.

11pts an hour?
I guess I did it all wrong.
Where did you come up with that figure? You actually see their books? Because I don't know anyone who does what you describe.
Docs do not generally bill for phone time/pts they don't actually see.

As for your hourly rate it fails to take into account overhead costs which are substantial, and people who just don't pay, insurance companies that won't pay, equipment and sterile disposable items, malpractice insurance, much less the $150,000 or so debt from medical education. The average doc gets about 30% of what he bills +/-5%. Then he is taxed at about 40-45% off the top of that.

I will close by saying that it is gov't and insurance companies that set reimbursement rates, not us. You pay for the entitlement and uninsured bunch in more ways than you know.

What do you pay or what does it cost?  Big difference.

Firing your doc because he doesn't give you your narcs on the first visit?  Sounds like your doc shopping if that's the only reason.

I have a friend married to a surgeon. She says her husbands malpractice goes up so much every year that some doctors are either thinking of quitting it or going to a private patient practice (you have to be a member to make a visit).  Of course he still makes 2-300k a year in his practice of 4 General Surgeons so I don't feel too bad (thats his take home pay).  But he was a decent guy and got his training via the Army payment plan.  He even was in Somalia during the 'blackhawk down' episode.

She told me the rate of insurance but I can't remember what it was (something like 100k a year for the practice comes to mind but i could be wrong, plus his own personal malpractice).   I know it was a figure that astounded me but I still have a hard time feeling sorry for doctors.....or lawyers for that matter.

Shit, that is the only thing women have told me hurts more then childbirth is kidney stones passing.  You hurt your hand you can ice or at least hold it and rub it.  You get that stone and you are in a fetal position and nothing will make it better until it passes.  Good luck.

A new patient level III visit for $127 is the norm around here.  15 minutes is pretty generous.
