China Reportedly Building Up Nuclear Arsenal to Counter U.S. Influence in Asia, Elsewhere

www.nti.org/d_newswire/issues/2005/7/29/d5115a42-8045-4496-b5d9-95a8e0dac23b.html

China is expanding its nuclear arsenal to counter U.S. power in Asia and other regions, the Washington Times reported today (see GSN, July 21).

However, the exact composition of China’s nuclear arsenal remains top secret, said Chen Yonglin, a Chinese diplomat who defected to Australia two months ago while stationed in Sydney.

“Everything about nuclear weapons is held by a very limited number of people,” he said. “Even sometime vice ministers may not know because it is strictly controlled by the general staff and central party leaders.”

China’s Nuclear Energy Co. runs both the country’s civil and military nuclear industries, he added.

Former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping crafted Beijing’s long-term military strategy toward the United States, using the phrase “hide our capabilities; bide our time,” Chen said.

“That means don’t draw any attention of the Western world — and especially the United States, to what China is doing,” Chen said (Bill Gertz, Washington Times, July 29).

No we can't.

That's anti-war, anti-nuke propaganda.  It assumes that a 100 megaton nuke has 10 times the blast radius of a 10 megaton nuke, or 100 kT has 10X a 10kT.  It doesn't work like that.

ETA: Although we have plenty to get the job done, don't get me wrong.  There is a lot of blow-up-the-world anti-nuke hype.

china, north korea, etc.

I've got a couple rifles, pistols, and plenty of ammo.  Not going to do a damn bit of good against a nuclear onslaught...

This comes as a surprise?

There was a news story on The Drudge Report the other day about a South American country (Chile!?) that accidentally discovered a Chinese arms shipment ... OK, maybe I have the details wrong but what in the heck are they shipping arms down there for!?  If it's not for support of socialist governments in South America, then is this something akin to the Cuban missle crisis in that they're working with South American goverments to set up strike points from which they can hit the US easier?  Who knows ...

All I know is, China is bad news ...

The other post nailed it on the head.  If you couldn't see this comming you are blind, deaf, and DUMB.  China is gearing up and they have only one major impediment to dominance.  That would be us.  I'm not expecting floods of landing craft any time soon, but expect Soviet style threats and aggressiveness only on steriods.  Asians have a hard time backing down once they puff up and it can make negotiations with friendlies tough much less the local bully on the block.

face the fact, the threat from china is never be the same like Russia. In addition to the military threat, the most fearsome threat is economy and this threat is going now. Do you know that we currently mortgage our future to china since they agree to buy billions of US bonds. Once they stop buying bonds, the interest rate will escalat immediately. This will cause huge impact on house market and stock market. We imports millions of electronic stuff and cheap goods from china and these goods become part of our life. US-China depend on each other more and more. The most difficult part is that not the chinese will succeed but what if they fail? The worry is there and we have no clue to cope with!!!

We do business in Venezuela and have heard that the higher ups in the Venezuelan Army are very nervous down there.  Seems Chavez has been arming the locals in the villages that are loyal to him.  Rumsfeld said something about it on a trip down there not long ago.  Why would it be so far fetched that China bolster South American governments and use them - communism is strong down there?  Notice that Russia is participating with China in war games too.

The Chinese have Troops in Haiti right now
The numbers might be low ( several hundred ) but they're still there

They're also  Building roads on several other Caribbean Islands ( Public works Projects intended to gain favor )

Roads can be used as Runways
