In a smaller aircraft you can keep one wing down to compensate for drift, but you can't do that in something that has long wings/pylon mounted engines since you'd scrape on touchdown so you keep it in the crab until the last second and then "kick out the crab" to center up for landing. They had to not only do that but fly a turning approach to get into position.
Yeah, it would be a wild ride.
I once landed at Imperial, CA in such a strong crosswind that I had to ask my dad (who was in the right seat) to lean back so I could get a good look the runway on short final.
Aircraft was an Aerospatiale Rallye (serious STOL with full leading edge slats, HUGE Fowler flaps and trailing beam main gear). I could fly that bird right off the bottom of the airspeed indicator and still have excellent control.
