I often hear horror stories about some of the crappy places guys have ended up. But what are some of the more nice ones? I would imagine that in-country, Hawaii would be one of the nicer spots, while overseas, Japan would have to be one of the top locations.

I would go back to any duty station. I've been able to find a lot of good things about everywhere I've been.
Yeah, forgot about FL. That would be pretty nice also. Club Gitmo is probably an alright location too, at least for our guys.
Spangdahlem Germany. The Eifel region is beautiful. Of course Bavaria takes the cake as quite possibly the prettiest piece of Earth with New Zeland close at 2nd.
I did 4 months TDY in Thailand (Bankok and Korat). By far the best place I'd been in my life. Spent some time in GTMO...not much to do there but fish or drink at the FRA bar.
DLI in Monterey is nice.. (Now they got rid of Ft Ord, to all intents and purposes)
Presidio of San Francisco would have been absolutely unbeatable. Every time I drive through there I get depressed that they closed it down. NTM |
+1 raven, it's time to renew!! |
APG. Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Brand new barracks, brand new mess hall, most excellent club, awesone museum, beautiful countryside...
And the weekend trip down to Whitemarsh Mall. We got dressed up in our As and decided to go shopping. We had just entered the mall when two Secret Service agents asked us if we would like to meet the President. President Ronald Wilson Reagan. And you know the answer we gave... There never was a President more loved by his military. And never will be a President that loved his military more. |
Fort Holabird, Maryland.
It was actually in Baltimore, which wasn’t a bad city at the time (1967). |
I was only there for 3 weeks on a TDY but I liked Guam a whole lot.
Ft Lewis only because I love trance and Seattle has a couple of clubs. Benning didn't have shit.
I wasn't stationed there but I did go through the Jungle Operations Training Center at Fort Sherman, Panama. During our few days off, that place was paradise.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton Washington. God it's beatiful up there.
I spent two months in Hawaii, and was non-plussed. I grew up in the Caribbean, so Hawaii was nothing new. I was glad to be gone from there. |
Hawaii was beautiful but I liked Yakima, WA a lot more. Much more gun friendly, no mosquitoes, and I really loved popping Coyote's with my .220 Swift. From the Yakima Training Center, one could usually see Mt Adams tower into the sky and the rest of the Cascades.

Ah, someone finally got it! ETA: It has to do with the perfect year round temps and truly beautiful biker bitches in Leesville |

Pre Gulf War I Saudi Arabia. I lived like a king in a palatial compound, was friends with a prince, and enjoyed many royal pleasures.
Certainly not Kandahar.
I spent two years in Mainz, Germany. That was a great tour of duty. I'd love to go back there and really spend some time. I was able to visit for half a day while en route home from the 'Stan, but there just wasn't enough time to really enjoy the visit. |
Being stationed there was a single man's paradise! Panamanian women are incredible. Can't say I cared much for the government esp. la guardia but the locals were super friendly and good people once you got away from the zone... Playa el diablo - what a beach! I miss that place |

Baumholder Germany was quite nice. Germany part, Baumholder was good due to close proximity to everything else.
Vlasenica bosnia was gorgeous, if not for the land mines. Macedonia was a bit of a shit hole Same can be said for Yong Song, Korea Ewa Beach, HI was OK. Wish I was stationed at Barking Sands, Kaiua Colorado Springs was great for the skiing. FT BLISS SUCKED BIG DONKEY BALLS Fort Leonard Wood was pretty nice for Lake of the Ozarks. Nice area all around. Bunch of racist crackers in the general vicinity, not a good place to be if you happen to be a minority. As I am white and don't wear a big star of david all the time, I had no problems. Ft Greely is beautiful, but the interior of Alaska has its issues. I would prefer to be along the coast. Valdez was nice (USCG has a base there) Ft Lewis was very nice West Point is striking, but its also a prison. Call it a wash. So, if I had to pick one to go back to... Germany for the traveling, colorado springs for the area. |
Pearl Harbor had the best weather and the two legged scenery was always changing. However puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington wasn't bad either. Fishing the Sound and the Hood Canal. Hunting the Olympic mountains and the wide open spaces in eastern Washington was a lot of fun. The only down side to western Washington was all the rain. You just learned to live with it.
Australia was nice.
Japan was wonderful. San Diego was cool. But Diego Garcia was the best. |
Berlin was heaven in the 60's but the pressure from the military was intense. I loved Ft. Ord.
Subic Bay P.I.
Got TADed to Barracks Duty for a couple of months. Bravo Co. 18yr old in Disneyland for adults Damn that place was fun Top Gun. Solid Gold Disco. Rock & Roll In Concert. Cindy Bar. Florida Club. Rock Cafe. Rock Expo. The Green Apple. Shakeys. The Playboy Club. Strawhat Pizza. The Jazz Club. Cork Room. Brown Fox. The Body Shop. Kong's Restaurant...to name a few |
NAS Oceana was great
NAS Sigonella was great NAS Pensacola NAS Meridian was a shithole when I was there |
same same? |
McChord AFB, WA
Wasn't stationed there, but I liked Wake Island when I was there. |
WTF??? The people I knew were educated in America, IVY League America that is. Same Same, don't think so. Nothing like steak and lobster 4 times a week. |
"Perfect year-round temps"? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Perfect MELTING temps. And for the biker bitches, whatever floats your boat. If snaggle-toothed pecker wreckers with tits hanging below the waist turn you on, go for it brotha. Just strap a 2x4 to your ass to prevent from falling in. |

Newport, RI summer of '76 for SWOS, weather always great, females relatively pleasant and moderately available. Tall Ships, now I didn't winter there so I may have easily missed the lousy times.
NSY Long Beach, 76-77, the base sucked, the shipyard was worse but my fiancee was going to college about 30 miles away. I guess the neatest place I ever was stationed at for short periods was for a few periods of reserve duty. The classes were held either at MSCPAC in Oakland , CA and out at Treasure Island, but we were berthed at the Q on Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. |
Fort Leonard Wood - again like earlier, only because I do like the Ozarks a bit
Fort Sam Houston - are there any place in the Army with more fine and available women? Fort Polk = SHIT Fort Lewis - I enjoyed my time there, Seattle is ever a pleasent trot up I5 Fort Gordon - gotta love desperate trailer queens with 2 teeths Fort Hunter Liggett - there ain't nothing there but brushes, hell cell phones don't even work Kaiserslautern, Germany - BEST POST EVAR...better than any other AE post except maybe Rota (but I ain't no seabee) Baghdad, IZ - SUCKS TEH BALLZ |
FT Lost in the Woods - The only good thing I can say about it was going over to the Lake of the Ozarks.
Schofield Barracks - Beautiful, you will get used to the smell of rotting pineapples. Kosrae - Did 6 months on a Civic Action team on this jewel of an Island in Micronesia. There is a Jap ship that was sunk by skip bombing B-25's in Lelu harbor. The Local girls like GI's. Thailand - Cobra Gold '93' in the city of Tak (by the Burma border). Beautiful Country with nice people, and nuclear hot food. $1.50 for a fifth of Mekong Whiskey and $8 for a girl, what's not to like for a GI. Yakima - A remote Training area in Central Washington, great place for EOD as everyone and their uncle from FT Lewis goes there to train. Great hunting, you can shoot as far as you can see which is for miles as there are few trees. Redstone Arsenal - Not bad, small post. Eglin AFB - Nice, right there in Destin FL!!!! NSWC Indian Head - "The Head" Goddamn shithole!!!!!! God, the Galley there sucked ASS and the Barracks were just as bad. FT Lewis - Great Post but the PLDC barracks on North Fort sucked. (1996) |
During my own service? San Diego.
During my father's, as a Navy brat? Pearl Harbor. |
Let's see...
Pendleton...nope Lejeune...nope Okie...nope Kandahar, AFG...nope Ellsworth, Malmstrom, Fairchild would have been nice. I love the West. Should have joined the chair-force |
Mister, you have got to be shittin me. Guam is one of the nastiest, military-hating places that I have ever been to. Nothing but a bunch of lazy, welfare fat fucks live on that island. I should have asked the pilot to drop me off in Hawaii on the way over. Australia <---------- now, there's a place I wouldn't mind living at in my retirement years. |
I can't wait to find out. My follow-on assignment when I leave Kunsan is Tyndall. |
