(Just kidding about the poll part...) Updated August 8, 2005 By Andy Wise MEMPHIS -- Police were called to two malls early Monday after crowds that turned out for utility assistance got out of hand. People complained that the Shelby County Community Services Agency didn't give them any directions. There was yelling, tension and a lot of confusion as people were trying to get help paying their utility bills at the agency's offices at Raleigh Springs Mall and Southbrook Mall. The only direction people got from the county was to go to the two locations, and the first 25 people would be considered for a $500 voucher. But people we talked to said it was complete chaos - no specific place for a line, so people sat and stood around everywhere. Police were called to both locations to keep the crowds under control. Witnesses said people attacked a security guard at the Raleigh Springs location. "I don't know what kind of system they need to come up with, but it needs to be a better one because this is getting out of hand," said Emmitt Marshall, one of the applicants. Angela Carter runs a temp agency across the street from Raleigh Springs Mall. She told 3 On Your Side one of her employees approached the crowd, offering them 300 warehouse and clerical job opportunities paying anywhere from $6 an hour to $12 an hour. Carter said only one of the people in line accepted the offer. "I see this every day," said Carter. "If it's not a hand-out, if it's not free, if it requires a little work, they don't care for it."   Shelby County Community Services Agency Administrator Kaye Lawler said the utility assistance program is funded by a federal grant. To qualify, a family of four must make less than $20,000 a year. The family must also have at least one member 60 or older, or 5 and younger, or proof of a serious illness. Social Security cards must be shown for every member of the household. But Lawler said federal guidelines restrict county employees from forcing applicants to provide "absolute proof" of their employment or ability to pay, even if they show a utility cut-off notice with a huge balance. "(Our employees) ask them, 'How did it get that large, and have you got anything that will show us that?'" said Lawler. "We're not allowed to ask for absolute proof."   Lawler said the system will remain first come, first serve -- starting at 8 AM Monday through Thursday at both locations. The agency has $665,400 set aside for utility assistance. Families who qualify can only participate once a year. |

This didn't strike me as anything out of the ordinary. I have been here too long and have become desensitized to this kind of trash. Memphis is defined by this kind of people.

Not just there but everywhere. What surprised me is that the Temp Agency employee not only had the hutzpah to go over there and offer them work, but that the media outlet had the hutzpah to report it! This needs to be circulated widely, to show just how lazy, worthless, and leechy (is that a word?) most of these shitstains are. |

Well gather crowds of the counties "finest" people and I'll bet the cops will be there every day. Somehow I'm seeing a crowd with the collective IQ of a bunch of chimps, screaming and throwing feces at each other over the "reward" for their craptastic existance.

Am I missing something? These folks were trying to stand in line for 500 bucks, and it is a surprise they turn down a 6 buck an hour job?
I bet you would see those percentages anywhere. The ONE of 300 probably looked at his chances of beating the line and was out of work anyways. I imagine those 12 buck an hour jobs were scarce considering the group they were recruiting. |

 Second... What's this new fad of italicizing entire news articles? I've seen several different posters doing it. Aren't italics supposed to put emphasis on just one word or small phrase?

Memphis,the shit hole of the state, i lived there about 3 months, now i live where i grew up about 100 miles east in southwest TN, the only time i go anywhere near Memphis is either to or from the airport and the casinos in Tunica MS.

I loved Memphis of course I was there for 2 hours and it was obviously downtown by the BBQ places. That BBQ was the best I've ever had. I have never seen the shitty parts.

I work for A utility company [gas and electric] and this does not surprise me in the least. If people really knew how many moochers had thousands of dollars of high end electronics, +++$$$ vehicles and kept the temps at 80 in the winter and 70 in the summer on someone else's dime, there would no longer be screwed up programs like this. For every 1 person that truly needs help, there is 999 lazy moochin, drug addled, baby poppin, welfare cheat or bum that is sucking on the Govt titty for "help". And they don't want a job either, that's for sure. Because every one is "beneath" them.

Guess handouts are pretty good there. I know a couple that moved there from here (Florida) to there so they could get TennCare. For them at least, it wasn't a long wait.
