Wife says it is a fad and they are not trying to harm themselves. WTF, any of you guys know what that is all about or how it started.

some of them see it as "art" others simply have emotional problems Hell I had problems when I was younger. Once cut a chunk out of my arm with toe nail clippers and couldn't even feel it. Its very bad to try to bury your emotions. It just fucks you up.

My wife is a therapist has a few different patients that are doing this. She said the best easy way to explain it is that inflicting pain on themselves to make them feel better. Usually these people actually have some serious in the head type shit going on.

When I worked for a while at a local girls college, I noticed that probably 10% of the girls there had scars on their wrists. I had to help several girls that cut on their wrists, but when I was there, none were successful in killing themselves. It was all superficial attention stunts.z

This is funny. "Look at me, and, feel my pain" is what MOST are saying. The ones that WANT to kill themselves, DO kill themselves.
The rest of it is simply pathetic, non-strong, stupid girls that will be in therapy for the rest of thier lives, and, blame men for it. I asked my wife on that one, and, that's what SHE said, so, blame her.It seemed so good when she was saying it, so, I posted...lol. |

They are feeling some sort of pain in life, whether it's physical or emotional, I don't know, but they cut themselves to feel less pain.
They may also be attempting suicide. I don't know though. |

I suspect it's in the middle somwhere..... Some of us have been through suicide drama and, ongoing stupidity at a point..... Certainly Wrist slitting is a casue for alarm......It's what was asked for....It's what they get, most times. In my experience the girls were going ape over their parents splitting up. Call me a hardass, but, I don't care, because I was there, and, did that. I didn't slit my wrists. Different generation I suppose. |

It's not about killing your self, see that what I think some see. It's not. Killing your self is rather simple. It's about dealing with emotions. I had the same problem. I wasn't to good at being angry, sad, happy etc. I would do the shit to simply release all the shit built up. It wasn't for pain. Hell I rarely ever felt pain. And I was embarrassed by it and would try doing it places people couldn't see and cover myself up. Now I am sure some people do it as a look at me, but to put every one in the crowd isn't right. Hell like I said I wasn't found out until I took a trip to the nut house with the sheriffs office and some emt's. |

I've seen these self-image issues in my own family. my stepmother (non live-in) raised my step sister in typical liberal fashion. She emphasized self esteem over everything else Not the good self esteem, where you are proud of your accomplishments because you worked hard for them. |

Not all these girls are depressed at all. They have tiny little insignificant problems in the grand scheme of things. They do it to make it seem like they are full of angst and have real issues with the world.
Most are much too dull witted to even capture problems outside of boys and their parents. They "cut themselves to feel" that's what I always say. Whenever I meet a girl that shows me that she cuts, I tell them, if you were serious you'd go down the highway, not across the road. That shit doesn't impress me at all. Probably 25% of the girls I meet either do this, or have scars from once doing it. Why? Not because I'm a magnet for psycho females, but I meet a lot of metal/emo/punk chicks at college and playing/going to shows and they seem to be the ones that do this the most. People that really want to kill themselves don't show outward signs of actually doing it, because they don't want people to stop them! Otherwise they just want attention. ETA: The best ones are the ones that when you ask them if they cut, they say no, they are marks from being tied up  .

It is often done to distract from an emotional pain.
It is a form of substitution, they replace a pain they don't know how to deal with and don't know will go away with one that they can control the intensity of and that will most definitely heal. Some of them kill themselves, some of them scar themselves permenantly, and some of them eventually get over it albeit with a lot of physical scarring. If you see a girl who wears long sleeve shirts in ANY kind of weather you can be pretty sure there is some cutting involved... and its best to just deal with them with kindness and compassion. |

Whats crazier? someone cutting themselves, getting their ear pierced, getting their dick pierced, or spending thousands of dollars on guns? There are those who would say that we are crazy for spending the money we do. There are those who think getting your ear pierced is ok, but not your dick. And now cutting designs into your body is body art in some places. Crazy is in the eye of the beholder. No matter how adamant you are about something, there is someone else as educated, and as intelligent, who thinks your wrong and feels just as strongly about it.

Piercing your ears or your dick is something else all together in my mind. I've known people with scarification, also.. which in one of the cases would qualify as having your arm cut up. But it was done professionally (yep) and it was an actual design. Cutting your arm as a 'release' is something different entirely, and I believe thats mostly what this thread is about. |

I'd assume that with that opinion your tattoo'd and pierced. Again without first hand experience no one will ever understand the mentality. I am tattoo'd and pierced, and they are very much the same thing. A lot of people get a new tattoo or piercing when going through a period in their life of pain or anguish, the pain helps them cope and releases the pain. I am heavily tattoo'd and pretty heavily pierced, and I do understand the mentality of it. Simple thing, for some others, if you have negative shit to say about it, shut the fuck up. This is one case where keeping your mouth shut is how you help. Even if you subscribe to the theory that people only do it for attention, then walk away QUIETLY and then your helping. |
