Quoted: The Exorcist must have been a very disturbing movie.

So, am I to believe you've never seen it?
|
Nope. There have been times that I've been curious about it, but too many people have told me that the movie is pure evil.

It had a huge effect back in its day. Not so much nowadays. You spend too much time smiling at everybody's 60s and 70s clothes.
That said, it is certainly a great movie and pretty tense in spots, but I never felt terrified. There were a couple of scenes that still shock the hell out of modern audiences (like the infamous "crucifix scene"), but those scenes serve as punctuation to the rest of the movie, which is what makes it so great. It's not a constant adrenaline-pumping slasher-fest. It's a very intellectual movie with some scary moments at key spots.
My wife HATES horror movies like Friday the Thirteenth and refuses to see them, but she sat down and watched The Exorcist with me one day, and it didn't bother her much at all.
The acting is also top-notch, especially Jason Miller as Father Karras.
