During the first week of July, my new wife and I visited the PIMA Air and Space Museum in Tucson Arizona. It was hot as hell (well over 100 degrees), but well worth the trip. Here are some pics from the visit. If you see anything you like, LMK and I can email you the high res version of it. Well, here we go!

Excellent pictures
 We were there several years ago and the EC135 they have is one I guarded while stationed at Offutt AFB when it was the Alert (and backup) Looking Glass. Brings back memories, no closer than 10 no furthr than 60

And that’s an incredible collection that they’ve got. I can’t believe that – for all practical purposes – they’ve got three Connies!!  It’s obviously unavoidable, but it’s a shame everything is outdoors.  |

I went to that museum last Tuesday, it was awesome. I have a lot of pictures of the same planes you do, but I was showing this thread to my girlfriend and it was cool to show her some of the stuff I didn't get pictures of. Thanks for sharing them.

That's the flying guppy. It was used to transport rockets IIRC.
Nice pics. Looks like they have more aircraft there than any of the museums I've been too. That SR-71 Blackbird is amazingly BIG, huh? I couldn't believe how huge that sum-bitch is. Sad to see the Piazecki in such dis-repair.

The first model I ever made as a kid was a Flying Banana. Such a unique helo, but you can definitely see the lineage to the Chinook. |

Strange how every cockpit is painted or sealed...I assume that is to keep the inside of the cockpits from cooking?
And what the hell is that beast with the single engine and contra-rotating props? The one with your wife standing under the wing? |

Why is it that so many parts of the plains appear to be a different colour? Sort of a flat, light grey. Is it to prevent the cockpits from overheating?
Did you see the place where they destroy B52s to appease the Russians?

I love the Pima museum. Did you go in the building with the B-17? They have a lot of great pictures and all of the detials for their missions are on the walls.
I would love to take a tour through the boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB. After I was at Pima, I found out that they have boneyard tours on certain Sundays. Wright Patterson in Dayton, Ohio is also a museum not to be missed. Thanks for the pictures! |

It is a great museum, with a lot of stuff inside huge hangars too. I have been there three times and still haven't seen it all. A B-36 peacemaker has been delivered to Tucson, but is not on display yet. It is a 6 propellor pusher that SAC used.

This was for the SALT or SALTII agreement, to appease both sides. This is the bone yard, and the bus tour, some of which was pictured above with planes on celebrity row, usually goes to that side of the base too. The B52s for that case were all melted down, but there are plenty of them left out there, along with tons of C141s, C130s, C-5s, and a bunch of other stuff. A misnomer is calling it a bone yard. Most planes fly into the place and can be flown out. Some are scrapped for parts, but many end up being sold. The AMARC bus tour has very limited dates and times and you usually need a reservation, so plan ahead and make some phone calls if you go. There is also a guided tram tour of the air museum, which is a great way to start out, especially if it is a typical 'hot' day. Take the tour and then cool of in the hangars. As far as the covered cockpits, the UV from the sun will destroy the canopies, and fade and crack the instruments and seats in the aircraft. Many of the fighters in the rows are flight capable, and are just in storage. With the rear cockpit it's an F-105G Wild Weasel. A friend's Dad was a backseater in those. It took a big man to fly those missions. The idea was to get the SAM site to paint you with their radar so you could shoot a HARM back at them. |

In the photo of the Fairey Gannet, note that at the left of the image, the tail of ex-NASA Boeing KC-135A "N931NA" - "Weightless Wonder V" can be seen. This was one of NASA's "Vomit Comet" aircraft.

Another great stop in that area is the Titan II missle silo tour...the Boneyard, PIMA, and the Titan II make for a great way to spend a day.
