Read Ghost Soldiers(about Rangers liberating a Japanese prison camp in the Phillipines) and Flag of Our Fathers (tells the life stoies of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima). Both are outstanding.

Great book. I've read all the others and this one was the best by far. |
GUNS UP.......by Johnny Clark.
Johnny and his best friend are M60 gunners in the same platoon in Vietnam. This is a true story and is one of the best books I've ever read. I've read a lot of combat books but it's hard to top this one. |
thanks guys for all the replys!
We were soliders once and young was good because they used info from the general An and his info about how he directed the battle. It jsut amazing what thsoe guys went through on both sides of the battle |

try 'Another river, Another town' - A teenage tank driver comes of age in combat (WW2)
"the Berkut" by Joseph Heywood.
At the end of WWII a crack SS trooper and a squad of Werewolves undertake a final mission for their Fuhrer. In close pursuit are a highly motivated Soviet Special Mission's Unit and an O.S.S. operative bent on discovering what that mission is....and stopping it. This book will keep you up for NIGHTS wanting to finish it and will leave chills running down your spine when you come to the realization that this very well COULD have happened. |
The Battle for Mogadishu. (Written by the guys who were there.)
Stphen Ambrose books. Ghost Soldiers |
I just finished "Dear Mom", by Joe Ward, for the second time. It is a great read.
One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry by John Worsham - it's important to me as it is the book that got me hooked on the Late Unpleasantness (between states) or The Mother of American Family Feuds (1861-65).
If you haven't read Five Years to Freedom, by Colonel Nick Rowe, you ought to.
Colonel Rowe's Filipino communist murderer was just released from prison a week and a half ago. |
Biography of Chuck Yeager
Gen. Thomas Frank's book. Name escapes me. Something like "American Soldier" William Manchester's 'American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur' - hard to get through. Painful at times. Hillarious during the WWI misadventures. Worth a read. Do you have any particular period you're interested in? Theatre? I have a few dozen books of soviet histories and holocaust survivals. Not highly recommended, just trying to get rid of boxes of books. |
Ijust c/p my post from another thread.

+1 If it were up to me, it would be required reading at every high school in the country. We sure could use more men like Colonel Rowe. |
Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose...an amazing account of WW2 in Europe.
If you can find it, Commando Etraordinary A Biography of Otto Skorzeny by Charles Foley War and Warrior Series Noontide Press Skorzeny was the German officer that lead the mission to rescue Mussolini. He was also charged after the war with attempting to get Churchill. daddyDett |

Bat21 and the followup The real story of Bat21. (something along those lines)
The Tunnels of Chu Chi. This one gave me nightmares for some reason. Point Man And Walking Point by Patches Watson. Sea Daddy to a lot of Nam era SEALS. Fiction but a good read on Nam bombing of North VN, Phantom Leader and Thud Ridge/Termite Hill/Luckys Bridge/Tango Uniform. Chicken Hawk. Don't remember the authors name but one of the best books on the helio war in Nam I've read. Cleared Hot is another. There are two other books written by guys who were aerial forward observers that I can't recall right now. These guys flew unarmed spotter planes to call in aerial bombers and were fearless. I'll post a follow up if the rest of the crew doesn't bail me out here. While not military if you have any interest in the early space programs Thomas Wolfs The Right Stuff is a must. Those guys had a set of big brass ones to pull off what they did with the political pressure put on them at the time. Great read. |

"An Army at Dawn" by Rick Atkinson. Excellent WWII book over the North Africa campaign.

The Seven Pillars of Widom by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)
Lawrence's account of his experiences with the then nomadic Arab tribes during WWI. Gives some good background info into the whole situation over there and some insight as to why things are so f$%ked-up today. Not an easy read though. |
Give Us This Day by Sidney Stewart. Tells his story about the Bataan Death March.
My war gone by, I miss it so - Anthony Loyd Also, if you want some excellent books for the bathroom (and not for reading), I suggest something by Richard Marcinko. According to various sources, the man has served. That may very well be, but his books are trash and and a literary train wreck. |

+1, the book Black Hawk Down is better and more factual than the movie, also, try Team Yankee by Harold Coyle, not many people have heard of that one. It's a novel from the '80's, may be somewhat hard to track down. Of course, try anything by Tom Clancy. I'm reading Sum Of All Fears right now myself (again), the movie sucked, but the book is very good. My favorite Clancy out of all of them would have to be Without Remorse. I read Starship Troopers when I was a kid, and well, I still read it from time to time. Try the book/screenplay version of Saving Private Ryan, there's some scenes and detail changes in the book that weren't in the movie. |
