Bill the Butcher was the sole saving grace of the movie.
Every part of the movie that he wasn't in sucked ass. |

I liked it because it was historical, they did a good job of portraying the hard life of 1860's era, the photography and special effects made it feel just like you stepped back in time, it was realistic.
Bill the "Butcher" was an interesting character |

I liked the history, seemed pretty authentic to me. And the movie inspired me to read the book. Amazing to think people believe crime in Manhattan is bad now. It is nothing compared to 100 years ago.
Makes the Wild West look tame. It was also interesting to see Federal troops rushed off the battlefield of Gettysburg to put down the draft riots. I had read this before but it really hit home seeing it on the big screen. |

[when asking someone for a light for a cigarette] >dove = a female pick pocket >badger = a thief who waits until a man and a woman are having sex, then he hits the guy with a club and robs him they even showed a wagon spraying the streets at night with a special disinfectant to stop "Cholera"  Bill the "Butcher" wearing the fancy clothing |

the part when they showed men enlisting in the army and old recruiting posters was interesting
>a man could pay $300 so he wouldnt get drafted >the recruiters promised >good pay >friends >free meals >uniforms 3 meals a day and good pay! they also showed a ship unloading tin coffins of the dead soldiers it showed lots of historically accurate depictions of life in old time NY, even some interesting scenes of Chinese immigrants. also showed a historically accurate depiction of an old fire engine putting out a fire |

Hated, hated, hated it. The best scene was where the Army of the Potomac marched in and shot down the rioters. Easily my favorite part. Go Union Boys! Shoot down them copperheads!

I had read the book before actually seeing the movie, so for me, the main enjoyment was seeing what it all would have looked like. The story itself was just an attempt to personalize the overall experience of living in that era. It was a time in our history that I knew nothing about, and while reading the book, I was shocked at how people lived back then.

My 19 and 21 year old sons said I am an idiot for thinking it boring. Therefore, I will amend my review by stating that I thought it an interesting period piece and was about an hour too long.

what was the reason for the dead rabbits? was it some type of sign for war?
the Irish carried a stick with a bunch of dead rabbits on it when they fought then in another scene Leonardo DeCaprio hangs a dead rabbit carcus on a iron fence? was it supposed to symbolize something?

i had to watch it with my girlfriend and was expecting to really hate it (i thought it was going to be some faggot musical deal) but it was surprisingly good. the civil war was one of my favorite historical periods. it was long and i can understand how some people might not like it but i think it was excellent.

the historical details were correct and made the movie interesting just for the historical scenes, I felt like I stepped back in time, the accents, the dress, the streets, the music, I think it was excellent. |
