Look for an Asus or Abit board. Get on board sound but no on board video (which sucks). Get the second fastest CPU and a case with at least 420volts.

The best advice I can give you is to buy elsewhere. Fry's is high prices. Look for a local discount computer store in your area. Around here, Central Computer and Pixel USA (both on the web in addition to their store) has Fry's beat.

What do you intend mostly to with your machine? Games, videos? Play back DVDs with Dolby Surround Sound? Re-calc huge spreadsheets?
My feeling is that he video board is the most important part of the computer, rather the CPU. I would get the best video board that you can afford. Get a 250GB HD, they are really cheap if you find it on sale. Or get the largest capacity that is on sale. No problems to add a 2nd drive later. I've had no problems with Western Digital drives. I would get a 32-bit AMD CPU, but most people got 64-bit, but there is limited software support so personally I can't spending the extra money. And get a quieter CPU fan, the factory one, is real noisy. A dual layer DVD-RW drive. Get a Sony. Even though dual-layer media is super expensive, I think the newer drives have mechanical and electronic improvements over the older single layer drive. |

Okay...what did I say that was BS? This is what I built. An Abit board, P4chip, 5 channle sound with ATI 128DDR ram card. 240g Maxtor HDD, 1 gig ram (I THINK 400 bus), and a Thermaltake case with 8 fans and 420watts supply. This system freaking FLIES and it is over a year old. Sgatr15 |

Oh don't be silly, we're going to all recommend computers without even knowing which OS you want to run or what you're going to do with your computer. If you only want to surf the net get the cheapest computer you can find - a Pentium I 66 Mhz will work if you could find one but you'll have to settle for one runing a bit faster than a gig, toss a few megabytes for RAM - figure 64 Mb is fine if you can find chips that small, the smallest hard drive still made - say 40 Gb, burn yourself a live distro of Linux - say Knoppix, boot that thing up and you'll be 70-80% as fast as a computer that cost 5 times as much running buggy and bloated Windows XP and not have to worry about anti-virus, spyware, pop-ups, or trojans. |

Unlike a lot of people here, I am not really into computers. I wouldn't spend precious gun money on high-end computer parts. Sure, a used PC would be cheapest like Sgtar15 said, but I just want to put one together. |

I see nothing wrong with sgtar15's advice on this matter. I was going to build one over the chirstmas weekend to replace my main computer that i toasted by overclocking it. Abit MB and AMD 2800 XP processor was going to be the base of the system. mmk

If you just want a machine to surf the net, I would just get pre-packaged one from Dell, etc, and all you have to do is load on your spy software and you're off and running. And just use the on-board video and sound facilities. They aren't the greatest in the world, but it will do, ie if you're not playing CPU/graphics intensive games. |

If Windows is screwing up, you can always reverse the polarity and create a reverse tachyon pulse field subspace window.
Or in other words, Fry's has some good deals...as long as it's in the ad. Most everything else is overpriced and the ECS motherboards may not be speed demons, but they do well...as long as you don't mind swapping out a few of them until you find a good one. :) |

When buying the parts, make sure the parts are new and not used/returned. Frys out here is famous for having a huge stack of used crap on sale. There's usually a little sticker on the box, otherwise you'll not notice until you open it up and it's missing cables or documentation. Evidently Frys has a really good shrink wrap machine
 .Also, if all they have is a big pile of the used/returned crap, look around and you might find it stored away up in the racks. To get something down from up high on the racks, I recommend an antennea from the cd/radio section  . |

When I was at Fry's, I saw the boxes of stuff that had been returned, and unless you are half-blind, it's not hard to see the big sticker on them saying RETURNED. Fry's is no different from any other store that sells returned item. They mark it as such, and discount the price. You buy at your own risk. Yeah, you really made it sound like they're trying to pull a fast one on the customer...

Coming from someone who has ignored sound advice on this very thread already, while also admitting that they don't know much about computers anyways, strikes me as hilarious. Why don't you research the answers on your own before you call BS just because a poster you don't like gave you advice. Don't be so fast to call bullshit on a topic you admit you don't know much about. Are you looking for someone to tell you "go to aisle three, pick up the box that says 'Abit AN7' on it, then go to aisle two and pick up 1GB of PC3000 DDR RAM and an AMD 3000+ processor and some cables, and then go to...?" If so (which is what it appears to be) you shouldn't knock ANY realistic suggestions in this thread. I said I'm not really into computers, not that I don't know anything about them. I don't want to spend my money buying top-end parts even though I know which stuff has good specs or not. I asked because I wondered if someone could steer me toward a good budget group of parts, which I would have researched as part of the next step. But apparently that is a futile quest here. As for taking advice on Arfcom, you have GOT to be fucking kidding me.  Bunch of drunk, armchair commandos...yeah right. Still, I was hoping there would be some sound advice among the chaff. |

I am just giving you a heads up. Out here they didn't give any other discount than the sale price marked in the paper. Also the salesman claimed the 'those' were all they had of a specific motherboard that was on sale. I found more on the rack (wayyyy up on the rack). If it was deliberate or not, I cannot say. I will however be careful of what I buy there and make certain that I'm not being taken advantage of. |
