the l1a1 is inch and english - the r1 is south afrikan and metic.  they are both excellent rifles.  parts availability is greater with metric though.  wouldn't feel naked with either one

I believe the L1A1 kits currently on the market are in better shape than the R1.

Tapco is selling the L1A1 for 170.00.  I have one coming soon and will be built on an Imbel Receiver.
