Simple, we have something like 60%Dems/30%Repubs/10%others registered. If all of the Repubs vote for Bush, just based on the shear number of Dems, Bush will never win. This state is solidly Dem territory.

CA may be divided along an east-west axis. The eastern half is more conservative and the west is the flaming left coast socialist republik.

FAG's please - last time I saw the figures there's most of them in NYC and Miami ain't exactly manly
 Like the states of the NE California is dominated by a few big cities - LA for one, and San Francisco for two. San Diego is still on the conservative side but it's slowly going. Urban city dwellers vote for more government, suburbs go a bit conservative, and rural areas go strong conservative. If you count the numbers the votes fall. California's red/blue map is very telling - the Bay area and LA are blue, the rest of the state is red - about 10/90% as far as land is concerned but about 70/30 for population. |

It wasn't always this way. Reagan carried the state, after all.
During the 80's and 90's there was an influx of illegals and lefty, upscale types in the bay area. The SF bay area heavily tilts democratic, the southern california area somewhat less so. San Diego offsets LA to an extent. A lot of the areas in the Sierras and the northern portions are classic Western states resource extraction demographics and vote Republican. They don't have nearly enough population to offset the big cities, though. |

They never learn
Voting to fund stem cell research and add 200 million in debt yearly for the next 30 years after a BIG budget crisis. Voting to let criminals out of jail by lessening 3 strikes law. Voting to tax only the rich for mental health programs. Legislature will then cut monies from general fund. Voting to force employers to provide health insurance or pay state to provide it. Voting to fund emergency rooms. Legislature will then cut monies from general fund. Voting to fund children's hospital project with $750 million in bonds (+750 million in interest). Legislature will cut outlays to childrens' health projects from general fund. All these are carrying by substantial margins.

C-Span as of 12:20am EST has 12% of Precintcts reporting in for California. 46/52 with Kerry in the lead.
Oh shit, California Senate race got a lot closer since the last time I looked between Boxer/Jones. 55/42 with Boxer in the lead of course. I'm amazed at how close the race is in California. Nader has been removed from the charts all together. -Steve |
