Yugo SKS - Rugers are very fun and reliable - but the mag prices turn me off.

Get the mini.. with the perspiration of the AWB mini-14 mag prices are back to normal..
THEN get the SKS... Never live without at least one of each.. let your children go hunger if necessary..

Yugo sks. Can be had for $89-$159 depending on the condition.
$89 will get you a good shooter, $159 will get you one in new condition. |

It's easy to scope a Mini-14 ranch. It is difficult to PROPERLY scope an SKS.
I've got both. Besides the retaining pin in the SKS bolt is hard to remove.<G> Dennis Jenkins

Only get an "SKS-M" variant, which you can find on gunbroker by doing a search with the words "SKS" and "TAKES" or "USES" in the search box. Its a factory mod that allows use of regular AK-47 magazines. Best of all worlds, dudes. |

SKS. You can get two or three for the price of the Mini. Mags aren't an issue. Just get some 7.62x39 stripper clips, and you're set.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but does SKS come in a detachable mag or not? The SKSs I see at guns shows don't have detachable mags, but I see the mags for sale online. Educate me. |

A normal, untouched SKS comes with a fixed, 10 round mag. You load it through the top via stripper clips. From what I've heard, all the detachable mags made for SKS's are POS's anyways. |

I forgot one thing: I believe we imported some detachable-mag SKS's from Norinco a while back. You might try looking for one of those (I don't know what they were called, sorry). Personally though, I think SKS's with 30 round mags look fugly, but if it's your cup of tea, then don't let my opinion hold you back.
I don't know how to convert SKS mags to accept AK mags if that's what you're asking. If you are dead-set on detachable mags for your SKS, then just buy some 'SKS detachable mags.' Like I said, however, it's hit or miss on quality, however. You may be lucky and find a good one. On the other hand, you may just waste your money on a piece of crap. |

It's not a conversion and the rifle is not damaged in any way. The fixed magazine is readily removed when the stock is removed. It simply hinges on a pin in there, and can't unhinge when assembled. The detachable simply locks onto the same pin. HOWEVER, they (sks detachables) are all pieces of crap both in quality and function. Quality speaks for itself, but the function is something you might not see at first glance. The feed lips on an SKS are a part of the receiver. The stock magazine only provides a follower. The bolt runs between these lips to capture ammo. The detachables work by being thin and mating to these same receiver lips. So? You say! Well, keep in mind that the bolt on a SKS 'captures' the feed lips of the receiver and magazine. What this means for those who try this silly detachable thing is that you cannot remove the magazine unless the bolt is to the rear. If you want a higher capacity, which you shouldn't as you have other rifles, get a 20 round Chinese fixed magazine. At least it functions the proper way. |

There is mod that allows SKSs to use AK mags, I have not seen it often, but it is supposedly a factory mod that is reliable and way better than the standard SKS high caps. |

If you're looking at the mini, maybe consider a Saiga rifle... It's going to cost as much as a Mini (~$200), takes detachable mags, and comes in every caliber from .223 to 7.62x51 NATO. |

Just got a Yugo, sucker is brand new, well after all the Cosmoline came off....for the price of the rifle and the ammo, I say get the SKS...Mini-14's just don't do it for me.....plus the SKS was designed with combat in mind, not the Mini, so I'm betting it's much more durable....and my Yugo is solid....most Mini's I've handled I was afraid if I dropped it the darn thing would shatter....

+1 You will have to try damn hard to destroy an SKS. Malfunctions are also very rare. They are very durable, reliable rifles. Since I've bought mine, I only had one malfunction. I was out shooting and all of a sudden it emptied 2-3 rounds on a single trigger pull. Upon disassembling the bolt I found a piece of metal from a cartridge had made the firing pin stay in the forward position causing a slam fire. I removed the obstruction, reassembled, and kept on firing. It's never missed a beat since! |

The greatest thing about most SKS's is the fact that there's no detachable magazine, so if you know any people that are afraid to shoot, they're more likely to shoot it to pop their cherry because it looks less scary.

Unadulterated BS. Both are reliable rifles and about the same when it comes to accuracy... meaning adequate accuracy only for both. The SKS is cheaper, but reliable SKSs have fixed 10 round magazines. The Mini-14 has a detachable 20-30 round magazine, but reliable Mini-14 magazines are expensive. If I could have only one I would get the Mini-14 if I were on a budget I would get a couple of good SKSs. Either way you will have a reliable shooter. |

Havnt been impressed with the aftermarket detachable mags for the sks at all, way to cumbersome. From what I have read though you can reload a 10 stripper clip awlfully fast in the sks. Am going to stay with it stock and that way can have it in the safe with a shoulder bag with about 300 rds on stripper clips in it already to go. Just toss the sks and the bag to whoever and they are good to go! The VC used it in massive numbers with just the stripper clips and certainly gave us a run for the money!hug.gif

If you're looking for a rifle to stick in her pooper (don't forget to post pics!), the SKS is the way to go, You get another foot of penetration with the bayonet folded out. Also you can use the grenade launcher, that's kind of kinky....
