With all the gun companies out there today, and Japans ability to produce high quality cars and computers and what not, why are there no Japanese gun companies. Or if there are, I'm not really aware of them, at least not big name gun manufacters.  Somewhere I think I remember hearing some brownings are produced in Japan, but I don't know of any actual Japanese owned manufactuers.

Browning used to be made there but are not any longer, IIRC. You have to realize that Japan, as a whole, really doesn't care for guns at all. Shame in working in a gun factory, perhaps? Not to mention the cost of shipping them here & given the extremely tight market, what would they make?

They're pretty much banned there.

Of course, that hardly stops H&H from having their showrooms in Paris, London, and New York...

IIRC there were a bunch of guns made in Japan and sold under the Ithaca Gun brand.

Weatherby makes some of their guns in Japan from Howa.

I think Howa also manufacturers the vanguard rifle for Weatherby.

The Vanguard is a Howa Lightning with some cosmetic changes.

Precision shooting had an article about 5 years ago from a gunsmith who was highly impressed with them.  Since the Howa's are machined useing CNC machines, very little is needed to done to them like square the action up and the bolt.  The biggest improvement the Smith had to do was put McMillian stock on it and replace the hammer forged barrel with a custom barrel like a Schneider on it.

WTF?

Howa used to make the AR-180 and used to make the Weatherby Mark V when they were made in Japan, They make the most excellent Howa 1500 bolt actions.  I love mine.  BTW, the Weatherby Vanguard is a relabelled Howa 1500, as were the Mossberg and S&W 1500 and 1700 rifles.

Miroku makes ALL Browning firearms, excpet for the Pro 9 and Pro 40 handguns, the High Power, and the Gold shotgun.  Citoris, Cynergs, BARs, BLRs, 22s, and Buckmarks are ALL Japanese.  Miroku also sells its own line of shotguns under its own name outside the USA due to Browning's marketing agreement.

SKB makes great shotguns, and makes the Weatherby Athena and Orion over/unders.

That's a pretty hefty chunk of the world's sporting arms market right there.

This Winchester 52b was made in Japan. (don't know when though)  I've never shot it but it is one of the best looking rifles I've held.

What do you mean "were"?  Most Browning are still made in Japan.

Tikka is Finnish.  So is Nokia.  Two companies often confused for Japanese.

Miroku comes to mind.

Don't forget that they also made the AR-180 for a while.

They can make them, they just can't own them.
