Also when the army moves is equimpment accross the nation say for a deployment do they use civilian trains under a contract or do we have our own? Thanks for your imput.

Here in VA on the CSX I see some military stuff from time to time and most of the time the equipment is on DOD cars. We use our locomotives for power but I'm sure the goverenment has some kind of agreement with CSX on transporting their equipment. Can't help ya with the pictures but I'm sure someone on here can as there are plent of train nuts on here

Almost always civilian contract trains. the Army does own some locomotives and rolling stock, but all the soldiers who crew them are in the USAR.

Here is a pick of an M1 being loaded on a flatcar in Korea

I would think that www.railpictures.net would have some pictures of tanks on trains, they have pictures of just about everything thats train related.

Google terms like military combined  with railhead and you'll get all kinds of hits on movement by rail.

These tanks were headed for destruction at White Sands Missile Range and were just offloaded at the rail head.  Although not on the flat cars, perhaps the angle of this pic may be of use to you.  I took this pic in 2000.

When the Sterling Heights tank plant was open, there would loads of M1s coming out the factory.  Only one would fit on each rail flat bed.  This was in 1991 or 1992 and they were painted sand color and not the green.  They may have been old tanks that were refitted.  They were quite a site.

Those M60s could still put a world of hurt on the bad guys.  What a horrible, horrible shame.
