Just finished Shadow War by Richard Miniter. Probably the most thought provoking chapter is the last entitled, Bombs and Ballots: The Madrid Attack and the American Election. It is incredible how the Democratic Party in the US and the Socialist Party in Spain approached their respective elections. No substance, all negativism, trying to divide the country.

In all fairness, any party in any courty trying to unseat an incumbant party has to use negative messages. If people think that things are going well, then they will have no incentive to change parties.

As for being divisive, if people are united behind a strong cantidate, then they will never vote a new party into office.

It's politics.

I just finished that book myself.  Should be required reading for anyone who cares about this country.
