As a do-it-all rifle, for plinking, SHTF, target shooting and home defense rifle, which set up do you like the most.
20" flat-top 20" A2 sights 16" flat-top 16" A2 sights M-4 style? |

My AR originally came with a 20" A2 HBAR upper then I bought a flattop receiver which was going to get a 14 1/2" but ended up with a 20" gov. profile. Both are 1/7 twist.
The plan now is to get another lower, collapsible stock, and then either swap out the gov barrel for a M4 type or just ante up for another complete upper! I've seen a CAR type stock with a 20" barrel but it looks like it would be front heavy. |
+1. Nothing beats muzzle velocity. I'll take the extra four inches offered by a 20" barrel and accept the minor maneuverability hit. A collapsible stock helps. CJ |

For personal use? 20" A2. I *cannot* justify spending what Trijicon wants for an ACOG on a scope, and I'm not a fan of red-dots for a rifle that allready has good sights... What do I think is the ideal 'issue' military weapon? 20" A4 with ACOG The M4 is great for tankers & other vehicle crews, SF, and the sort of rear-area folks who would have gotten a M1 carbine in WWII, but the full-length rifle is a better front-line weapon... There's no reason for a short barrel & collapsable stock anywhere else, and BOTH are detrimental to accuracy potential... There is a REASON we have A2 sights, they are vastly improved over the old A1 variety when it comes to hitting targets at longer ranges... Oh, and on a flattop, I'll take a carry handle over fancy flip-up 'BUIS' any day... Need that windage & elevation adjustment, a/o the crude adjustments on most 'flip-up' sights... Although I think they do make a standard A2 sight with W/E mounted on a rail-attatching 'pedastal' for BUIS use... That would work too... |

I've got both the 20" A2 and 16" A2 so that's what I currently prefer.

16", 1/9 HBAR, A1 sights and a CAR collapsible stock.
The HBAR maybe alittle heavier but it should take more abuse. IMHO, I think that's the best all around useful combination. Colt_SBR |

That's the setup I had. I traded the HBAR for a Bushy light weight bbl. I liked the HBAR, but I wanted "evil" features. |
If I could only have one, and no accesories, tele-stock on a 20" with and A2 upper.
Only one with accessories, make the above a flat-top and add an ACOG a rail system and a sure fire. |

I've got a Post-ban Bushmaster 16" HBAR, A1 upper with an A1 stock. I'm looking around for a collapsible stock to make it right. Been looking around for a "name brand" CAR stock without alot of luck. Alot of cheep stocks out there but I can't put a cheep stock on a fine carbine. I'm also going to have the barrel threaded for a three prong FH. Then it’ll be finished. I really don’t need a bayonet lug (although I would like one). Colt_SBR |

+2 But, I also have an EO-Tech on mine... |

A4, 14 - 16" in the 7.62 x 51 variety. |
M4
I have no use for longer range shots from a puny round like the 5.56. If I want/need longer range punch I'll use a rifle that fires a real bullet. The 5.56 is good for up close IMHO. At distance I'll take a battle rifle like the FAL or M14. |
I got a 4 pos. RRA stock from Adco for my XM15E2S, that I'm pleased with. |

I have to agree. Put a VLTOR on my 20" after the ban just for the time being, got to say I like it a lot. Canadians knew what they were doing... |
I'd have to say my 20" A2.
Course, It has a match trigger, sights, and a free float tube, and weights a ton, but It is reliable and extremely accurate. |
Yes, I just have a Colt factory CAR stock on mine as of now - I need something with a better support, but the stock I plan to use is a bit pricey, and will have to wait. |

Actually I disagree. In my opinion the ideal jack-of-all-trades AR would be as follows 18" govt profile barrel w/ M4 feedramps Gem Tech bi-lock flash suppressor mid-length gas system Larue 12" free float tube ACOG TA31 Larue ACOG QD mount Troy rail mount front sight ARMS #40L rear sight Magpul 93A stock Magpul Modular pistol grip Tango Down vert foregrip PRI gasbuster charging handle standard Colt bolt/carrier Surefire Millenium M96 Unfortunately the barrel is not made to my knowledge. But I think that would just about do it if you were only to have one rifle. |
Mongo posted a pick in another thread of a colt 20" bbl with M4 feedramps that had not yet been drilled for a gas port, and had an odd profile, but was still heavy. A little lathe time, and you'd be there. |

I think there are companies that will custom make what I want. Unfortunately I think it'd also be rather expensive. However, with all the other high dollar parts in my list, I'm not sure that it'd be the killer. 18" govt profile barrel w/ M4 feedramps mid-length gas system Gem Tech bi-lock flash suppressor $85 Larue 12" free float tube $300 ACOG TA31 $1000 Larue ACOG QD mount $125 Troy rail mount front sight $120 ARMS #40L rear sight $110 Magpul 93A stock $225 Magpul Modular pistol grip $100 Tango Down vert foregrip $60 PRI gasbuster charging handle $90 standard Colt bolt/carrier $180 That's $2400, plus you still need a lower, and upper, and the internals for each, so figure another $300 on top of that. Now you've got yourself a $2700 rifle. |
